What are the alternatives - how good are they and how easy to use/install etc are they?
Is it possible to remove and subsequently reinstall the official u3 launcher?
I know that this information is dotted around the forum but it wuld be good to have it all in one place!
I'm guessing you just mean menu. As in launcher. Or launchpads. Or application menus. Or whatever you'd like to call it. They really have nothing at all to do with U3 as they're entirely independent (none of them require U3 to run).
That said, there's PStart, which has been around for a while (but is, unfortunately, closed source). And there's ASuite, which is relatively new, similar to PStart and open source. Then there's AutoStart, which is also open source, but is a more simple launcher that does a menu per drive.
I'm also finishing work on Portable Apps Menu and plan to finally release the beta.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Yeah, I mean the menu I guess. Will your menu allow adding shortcuts to programs easily? Will it replace the whole u3 system or will it build on it. I have problems getting u3 to autostart on university pcs, so the launchpad never comes up without constantly forcing the process to end and restarting it, so an alternative that works more smoothly would be nice!
You might want to have a look at this :

(link is to the NFO)
its called "the GnU3zer"! , but it does use PStart
(and Liberta AutoStart)
its a replacement for the CD-rom device on the U3
I dont think it uses ANY of the advanced functions
the u3 controller offers , like multi-LUN partitioning,
but who knows whats next ?? It sure looks like
something is happening in the u3 "hacker" circles...
Autorun on public computers ?? shouldn't happen no
matter WHAT you do.....
Yes , it is possible to remove or re-install the
original u3 LaunchPad , at least on sandisk and memorex
sticks. just go to their site and look for
"LaunchPad updater" or whatever they call it this week
I didn't know that they used AutoStart.

Sorry to disappoint you , but it isn't
the U3 company using Liberta.(they should though)
Thank you very much for the great Liberta app ,
the new version is SO good ,especially because it
works on HDD as well.
( I have a flash-stick that behaves like a fixed disk.
I can make multiple partitions etc on it )
I'm looking forward to the modules....
I know that U3 dont use it, I was referring to GnU3zer

I'll have a look at that - wanted to get a thread where all the options were all in one place so I could decide.
Auto play isn't disabled on the university pcs, u3start loads and the lanuchpad loads as a process but doesn't properly load to a usable state unless you force the process to end and then restart launchu3. It's annoying!
Thanks for the link...
Hello,
I'm looking for a non-admin required Launchpad. I have red that the Geek Squad should work without admin rights, is that so?
I would like to use my Sandisk U3 USB on my pc at work and I have no admin rights there.
With a non-admin Launchpads .ISO file a could use the Sandisk installer to exchange the existing one.
Thanks!
/K
The main question, as I see it, is:
"Is there a way to use U3 apps without needing the full U3 Launchpad?"
Or, putting it another way:
The most annoying thing about U3 is that CD-emulating partition of them. It confuses packet-writing software. It adds an unnecessary drive letter. It will autorun unless you take special steps to prevent it (some versions of the Launchpad can disable autorun -- mine doesn't, unfortunately).
Let's say I backup the LaunchU3.exe from the drive. Then I use the uninstaller from the U3 site to remove the extra partition. Then I restore the LaunchuU3 to the drive. Will I be able to manually run the Launchpad and then use it to run the U3 apps?
I ask it because there are a few proprietary apps (Skype comes to mind) that are available as U3 but, AFAIK, not available as a generic portable app. So, I would like to use portableapps as my main platform but reserve the option of using U3 for special cases.

I'm wondering the same thing. I'd like to get rid of that CD partition and have a normal flash drive, but still be able to run the U3 Launchpad manually from the normal flash drive. If the CD partition is only there for autostart, I wouldn't think that would be a problem. If I get ambitious this weekend, I'm going to backup my U3 Firefox, copy the Launchpad files to the flash drive, remove the Launchpad, and see if I can run the Launchpad after it is unistalled.
