@ John: very strange... I haven't any extension or add-on, but it doesn't work fine. It opens a lot of windows when starts and, if I close one of them, Thunderbird closes itself automatically.
edit: problem solved changing the value mail.tabs.drawInTitlebar from true to false.
It's likely the result of a bad extension. You should not revert to 16.0 due to security issues. In my upgrade, the QuickText extension was the culprit.
