Greenfoot Portable 3.0.4 Dev Test 1

Application: Greenfoot
Category: Development
Description: From the publisher's website:
Greenfoot teaches object orientation with Java. Create 'actors' which live in 'worlds' to build games, simulations, and other graphical programs.

Greenfoot is visual and interactive. Visualisation and interaction tools are built into the environment.

The actors are programmed in standard textual Java code, providing a combination of programming experience in a traditional text-based language with visual execution.

App is closed directly after started

Hi!
I hope, this is the right place to put my question:
After installing, I wanted to start Greenfoot by starting the GreenfootPortable.exe. I see a starting screen, but the app closes directly after that. I don't even see it showing up in the Task Manager.

Does anyone know, how I can fix this?

Thanks
Janet

Solution #1

The first and most obvious thing for me to ask is if you have the OpenJDK Portable release installed in the same root folder as Greenfoot. By this, I mean that the folder "Greenfoot Portable" and the folder "CommonFiles" (which would contain OpenJDK) are in the same folder. I don't think I updated Greenfoot to take advantage of some of the minor updates I used for BlueJ, so one step at a time.

Thank you for your quick

Thank you for your quick answer!

Both folders where in the same folder right from the start - as is the BlueJPortable folder, so that is not the problem.

Could there be some interference with the Java, that is running on my machine?

Shouldn't be

There shouldn't be any interference from locally-installed JDK installations. I'll see if I can reproduce the problem and if I can figure out why it'd be doing that to you. Also, you don't need BlueJPortable installed alongside Greenfoot, they just happen to share a codebase and they run virtually identically from the launcher standpoint.

I know, I don't need BlueJ to

I know, I don't need BlueJ to run Greenfoot. I just wanted to give that information to help with figuring out the issue.

Best regards,
Janet

http://bluej.org/download/files/bluej307-greenfoot221-standalone

I downloaded the combination of blue-j and greenfoot from http://bluej.org/download/files/. The greenfoot from there now works perfectly fine.

Thanks for the help.

Bye,
Janet
