Problem with Updater on V11 & V12: It detects new files to be downloaded and installed - but doesn't do it !

Intro:
Longtime user of [illegal suite], I am switching back to my old PortableApps due to many facts, mainly the very bad communication with customers, very slow updates and for a 6 month break from Jun to Nov 12, where the project was dead and unreachable for any answers. Prefer Portable Apps and John Haller Wink

Actual problem: Having installed PortableApps.Platform on different machines, I recognized that on my main test system I got a very nasty problem, both with V11 and V12B:

After starting the App Updater, it detects always they same five apps to be updated: LibreOffice, Bleachbit, and so on.
I press the update button ... and just 1 second after it geet the message that all applications are update. (Impossible with LibreOffice Wink
The next time I check for updates, them same old five apps are displayed again. And I press the Update button ... same procedure as before.

I tried this with both current plattforms and with or without restarting the platform.

So whats the problem? The Updater detects the right files, but doesnt do the donwload neither the install - and display after max 1 sec the message anyway, that all went fine and the new programs are installed.

Anybody any idea? Maybe some directorty of downloads and installations that went corrupt? How can I fix it?

And I want to get this fixed - a complete re-installation of the plattform AND all the SW is a nogo.

Every help will be highly appreciated. Thanks, Daniel

ScreenReader Mode

You activated screen reader-friendly mode which uses a different method of having the updater and app store selections work. Normally, it uses checkboxes (checked by default in update mode) than you can check with your mouse. As these don't work with screen readers, we use the alternate standard Windows listbox multi-select with it (combination of CTRL, SHIFT or ALT and using the cursor keys and space to select). The side effect in update mode is that the apps are NOT selected by default and you need to select them. So, if you click Next without first selecting the apps you want to update, it updates 0 apps.

Go into Options - Advanced and uncheck Screen Reader Friendly. It's off by default, so you likely turned it on in a previous release as a few other folks did and were then confused. It was labeled keyboard friendly previously but we switched it be screen reader friendly as it's really only intended for that purpose due to the shortcomings.

Welcome back to PortableApps.com. We hope you enjoy your stay. The suite you mentioned is still confirmed as illegally distributing software from Piriform, Mozilla and lots others, so we don't normally permit discussion here (that's why the name was removed from your post). We should probably have a thread specifically for people who are converting.

You made my day - Thanks!

John, you are THE man, thanks a lot - you made my day. Sorry for late answer but those days got very busy.

Just wanted to inform you, that you were completely right. Eventhough on first sight I didn't believe it, because I never enabled a feature "Screen Reader friendly..." Yes, I enabled "keyboard friendly feature" - not exactly knowing what it does, but it sounded good Wink

As I learned from your post, you changed the name of the feature and when I understood the consequences it has I turned it off immediately - and now every things works smooth again.

Maybe it might be a good idea to have some warning popup informing about the big impacts that enabling "Screen Reader friendly..." has?

---------------
Thanks also for your Welcome back message. I feel very comfortable with PortableApps, the platform proved to be stable, growing, reliable and lasting as well as the community - so I'm shure this time my stay gonna be much longer Wink

I even did'nt know that "the other group" is distributing SW from many providers illegally - that's very bad but completely unknown outside the core community. I only had so very bad experiences with there update service and non existing support, more than one time - they were so annoying, so they bored me out of their user base.

But to conclude this subject: I would strongly support your idea of establishing a thread specifically for people converting from "the other group" to Portable Apps.

Thanks again an have a nice weekend!

Glad to Hear

Glad to hear it's working as expected again. There are still some kinks in screen reader mode that need working out. I'm hoping to have them done this month so that it works as expected for everyone.

Most users of the other suite don't know about the unsavory activities of the publisher. They even went so far as distributing our apps with our name, splash, readme, source and license removed in their first 2 versions. They regularly censor their forums and remove or alter any posts about it. I think it happened recently when some of their users found out that all the Piriform apps are being packaged illegally. I think we will set up some info for folks who wish to get out of that world.

Have a great weekend, too! Smile
