icon and label problem

I downloaded and was using PortableApps.com in the form of Google Chrome browser. I recently deleted it. Meanwhile, when I click on "My Computer" my primary drive is now labeled "PortableApps.com" and the hard drive icon is now a USB Flash icon. How do I get rid of the "portableApps.com" label, renaming it to "Local Disk C:" or "C:" and restore the C: drive icon to its original/default icon? I've done a search of all files, and a regedit. I tried renaming but when I try to delete the PortableApps.com label it renames itself to PortableApps.com, no matter what I try to rename it as. Seems like I've been hijacked or infected. BTW: I'm using XP Pro with SP2.

Autorun.inf

The Autorun.inf file in the root of your drive holds the name of the volume. You can either delete the file to prevent the renaming, or you can edit the file with notepad and make the name whatever you wish.

icon and label problem

Hello, and thank you for your reply. One last question: I found the Autorun.inf file and there are 2 entries: Icon and Label. The Icon was a PortableApps.com icon. I can change the label easily but where does windows keep its cache of default icons so I can select the hard drive icon as a target to display? Thanks very much for your help.

Easy fix

If you just remove the Icon line, the drive it's on will show the default icon. Technically, you could reference some .dll file or .ico file but just removing the line is easier.

Thank you, darksabre. You're right! My computer is back to "normal" now.

Alternatively, you click the

Alternatively, you click the "PortableApps.com C:" label in the remaining drive space to rename your drive from the Platform/Menu.

Gone

Yes, but he said he deleted it. It wouldn't be available for him to do the renaming that way.

Reboot

once you delete an autorun.inf, windows holds onto the name until you eject and reinsert the drive. or, for a local drive, reboot.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thank you for your reply, gluxon. I tried that but it keeps renaming itself. The Autorun.inf advice seems to be the best solution so far. As soon as a large file finishes downloading and I can reboot I will try that. @John: If my editing attempt of the Autorun.inf file fails I will try your idea. Thank you all for your help. I am grateful.
