Try,
Tools/Options/Advanced/Network then click Settings on "How Firefox connects to the internet". Then choose "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network".
That will probably sort you out.
I have the same problem trying to connect at the library, I have tried changing those settings, but still nothing, maybe something is blocked?
Internet Explorer works no problems
It might not be auto detecting correctly. You can find out the settings from Internet Explorer, then enter them into Firefox. I would be surprised though - I have never come against a proxy that can't be autodetected. More likely Firefox isn't allowed through Windows firewall. Renaming firefox.exe iexplore.exe will possibly fix that, depending on how naive the firewall is. Remember that with Portable Firefox you will have to modify the launcher to load the new modified Firefox correctly...
thanks, I'll give that a go tomorrow, I used http://www.auditmypc.com/whats-my-ip.asp and it said no proxy was detected, hopefully that will fix it.
EDIT - regarding the copying the settings from internet explorer, most of the stuff in the options window is removed, is there any other way of getting them?
When in doubt, always check the support page first. There's a section on configuring proxies with a link to the ProxyGet utility:
