Opera 12.13 search engine switch

When upgrading from Opera 12.12 to 12.13 my default search engine IXQUICK was/is changed to GOOGLE. Happens every time. And that is definitly NOT OK. Probably an Opera issue but good to know.

Opera Feature

This is from the 12.13 changelog:
Windows
Improved protection against hijacking of the default search, including a one-time reset
I would say that either i. That feature is misbehaving in some cases, or ii. Opera thinks that your IXQUICK is a hijacking, and simply returns it to the default, which is Google.

Either way, it is an issue in Opera I would suspect.

romulous Thanks. I never read

Thanks. I never read the changelog... lazy? Wink

Could be that while working on the code handling search engines the fundamenatal changes in the functionallity lead to some sort of reset to GOOGLE. But that would probably also reset ANY selected search engine.

What do I know. I'm just guessing. Smile

By the way. The problem happens ONLY when upgrading. After changing back to IXQUICK the problem is solved.

Ah, only a one-time reset

Ah, so it was only reset the first time you ran it after updating? If so, that is the behaviour that is being reported on the Opera blog entry for this release by other users as well. I thought that it was resetting every time you launched Opera.

The way I read that changelog entry - "one-time reset" - is that it was intended for every person who installed the update over the top of a previous version would have their search engine reset. It is sort of implied (the way I read it anyway) that they may have changed the format of the search engine entries, and needed to reset everyone to ensure that they could change to the new (more attack resistant) format.

As he stated, Opera is purposely switching it to Google on an upgrade because some folks settings were hijacked as a one time reset. And it looks like ixquick was implicated in one instance of hijacking.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Self update

Thanx for all the great respons.

With all this new information in mind I feel the need to update myself and instead of complaining give credit to the Opera developers team.

By the way... next time I will look upp the change log myself. Wink

Thanx all. See you around.
