..

Ok, moved this to the U3 Apps forum (Thunderbird Portable is the open portable app that works from any portable device... it's different from TB for U3).

What version of TB for U3 do you have? Does it have the PortableApps.com splash screen? (If not, it's an unlicensed, unsupported package) What version is it? (check in Manage Programs) Have you tried ejecting the device, rebooting and then restarting the app?

Update process...

Did anything go wrong in the update process? Did you happen to remove the drive or stop anything before TB had finished updating (it'll take 5 to 10 mins depending on your drive to fully update sometimes)?

Manual

Well, it looks like the update somehow corrupted itself. If this were Thunderbird Portable, I'd say to just reinstall it over itself. Unfortunately, U3 doesn't support this... so we have to get manual and a bit tricky now.

1. Download Thunderbird Portable 1.5.0.7 PR3
2. Run the EXE and install it anywhere you want.
3. Where you chose to install, you'll see a ThunderbirdPortable directory. Keep track of that.
4. Insert your U3 device fresh but don't start any programs.
5. Copy the contents (just the contents, not the actual directory) of the ThunderbirdPortable\App\thunderbird directory (from step 3) to the following directory on your U3 device:
?:\System\Apps\FEFECB84-0E05-42d8-B044-F2D0FCFF8C15\Exec\thunderbird
(Note that you'll have to show hidden directories to see this.)
6. Start of TB for U3 and let it update to 1.5.0.8

That should do it.

What happened

Did you follow the directions as written? At which step did you notice your data missing.

Here's the deal, your data is probably still there and intact. It would be at:
?:\System\Apps\FEFECB84-0E05-42d8-B044-F2D0FCFF8C15\Data\profile

That would contain your entire profile. Your saved messages would be in a Mail directory. Anything local would be in Local Folders. As long as this is all still there, it's recoverable by recreating your profile. Thunderbird's update process does *NOT* erase your profile or any profile bits. In fact, it doesn't touch your profile at all during an update. TB itself will update a couple minor things on its next launch.

The only reason they'd be gone is if you'd uninstalled TB for U3. When you do this, the U3 platform erases the application and all your data. The U3 Launchpad's dialogs are, unfortunately, not clear about doing this... so some people have made this mistake in the past.

And remember, I'm doing this for free. I'm not paid. So, there's only so much support I can do.
