VLC closes immediately after launch / doesn't launch - Windows 8

Hello,

My VLC Portable (latest, 2.0.5) has strangely just stopped working. I upgraded it awhile ago (whenever it was released) and it was working fine.

When I try launching it (tried with a video file 'open with', launching the executable directly and via portable apps platform) it just does nothing.

Sometimes I see the splash image for a brief second, then nothing. No error message - and the process is not listed in task manager.

I've tried reinstalling, deleting the directory and reinstalling, and reinstalling in other locations and still no luck. Given that it is a portable app I'm totally at a loss as to why deleting the directory and then reinstalling does not fix this issue.

Does anyone have any suggestions how I might resolve this?

Let me know if you need any more info,

Cheers,
Brett.

Run Directly

Have you tried running VLC.exe directly within the VLCPortable\App\vlc directory? This will run it in local mode but will show more error messages if there are any.

Same Issue

I am having the same issue. VLC opens but I cannot see the actual player. It seems to open somewhere "offscreen" as if it is being projected outside the video display area. SO while the application is listed as being open, I can't actually view it, which means I can't make any changes to options or functioning.

I have tried:
1. uninstalling and reinstalling. Twice.
2. I've tried running the application as suggested in this thread, from the directory
3. I am running Windows 7. Not quite sure which version, but I keep up with all the latest updates and and definitely deep into the most recent service pack (as of June 18, 2014)

Any clues, known issues, or suggestions of where I can go to get help on this?

VLC

If it happens when you run it directly, it's not an issue on our side (the portablization). It could be spawning off screen. Do you get the icon in the system tray for it?

I do get the icon in the system tray and the program appears to be running but "spawning" offscreen as you say. Can this be corrected?

Keyboard Shortcuts

If you use the keyboard shortcuts to access the system menu (the menu you get when you click the app icon in the upper left of its window) you should be able to move it back onto the screen: http://superuser.com/questions/53585/how-to-move-windows-that-open-up-of...

Thanks. This seems to be the solution.

Though there still seems to be a sizing issue with the VLC view window. Minimizing it is making it larger while manual control of the size eliminates the dropdown menu selections. I can include screen shots if you are interested.
