As I understand it..

because of section 4.1 of the license you pointed to, the author's permission would be needed to make this browser portable.

4.1. Except when and if, and only to the extent expressly permitted by this License or by the applicable law of Russian Federation the User shall not be entitled to modify, decompile, disassemble, decrypt or perform other activities with the object code of this Software with the only purpose of obtaining information on how algorithms used in this Software are implemented, to create derivative products using the Software, and otherwise use, or allow other persons to do so, the Software without written consent of the Rights Holder. The User may make a modification of the Software solely for his or hers own use and reverse engineering for debugging such modifications. The User shall not be entitled to distribute, communicate, make the Software available for the general public or otherwise use such modifications, except as for his or hers own use.

Hm, Google Chrome have smth like it in it's license
nonetheless google chrome portable are made.

Yandex portable

I can understand your arguments guys. It's clear that you can make portable since you are not doing nothing that is expressed in the statement, so you better read carefully and tray to understand, not to be frozen by fear.

"User shall not be entitled to modify, decompile, disassemble, decrypt or perform other activities with the object code of this Software with the only purpose of obtaining information on how algorithms used in this Software are implemented"

You are not modifying, decompileing, disassemble or decripting WITH THE ONLY PURPOSE OF OBTAINING INFORMATION ON HAOW ALGORITHMS ARE IMPLEMENTED". If yo want it more clear you can stay watching a glass of water man!

You are ignoring some

You are ignoring some of the license text:

...User shall not be entitled to modify, decompile, disassemble, decrypt or perform other activities with the object code of this Software with the only purpose of obtaining information on how algorithms used in this Software are implemented, to create derivative products using the Software, and otherwise use, or allow other persons to do so,...

Emphasis added by me to direct your attention to the bit that affects us.

The license expressly forbids creation of a derivative work - which is what would need to be done to create an offline installer for Yandex.

An online installer is still possible as has been said elsewhere in this thread, but we do not package and maintain Chromium clones without good reason because they are almost all the same with little added benefit.

Yandex Portable

Thank you for your apreciation.

To understand the text in full context even give us more reasons to think it is possible to develop portable Yandex. That's why I pointed specifically to that lines more confusing. Let me explain you something:

1. As you also can read in your own marked words, a portable program is not a derivative product builded in base of making operations such as "modify, decompile, disassemble, decrypt or perform other activities with the object code of this Software with the only purpose of obtaining information on how algorithms used in this Software are implemented". (Note the "purpose" of these operations is part of the sentence and the interpretation, I believe readers shoul understand the sentence as an entire content. So is not me, but someone here is ignoring text parts. Thus, some positions contrary to the portable version in this threat are not based on the Yandex Desktop Software License Agreement- that is not exactly the same as EULA- as other posts pretend to establish it, since the agreement and the software comes from other country than US)

2. As a portable don't change functions of the program, (see 3.1.1 here - https://yandex.com/legal/desktop_software_agreement/ - ) the user is of course free to operate the preferable way of installing or executing the software it's going to be used.

If we accept this perspective based on full reading and contextual comprehension of the software agreement, then the question here points not to the changes of the "code" in it's esence, just the installing or executing mode of that software.

So guys, I would like to discuss with different arguments then, or even different points of the license text, but the, someone should find in this license the point that forbids on the way such software is installed or executed, or specifically refering something to the portable mode. Otherwise executing any sofware in virtual mode should be forbidden also, because we can use exactly the same arguments all you guys are using in the thread of this issue to avoid the use of Yandex in "Portable Mode".

3. As I see in different posts, even yours, some people is aiming the debate to the question of if Yandex is exactly another Chromium version or not. Some of you are asumming it is the same as all others with no arguments, no measurements, not taking into account the work of developers in each flavour of Chromium and their arguments to do so. So first of all, respect to the work of partners, and second, support your opinions with evidence.

But guys, I'll tell you all, that here we are not talking about that. I thought we were talking about the question of making a Portable version of a software, in this case a Chromium browser, as others the site could made portable, and I guess we should analyze the legal aspects without fear, taking into account the ethics, the technical issues involving it and the norms and regulations of this site. My respect to you all, but if you want to discuss the differences of Yandex to other Chromiums you should open a different thread.

Based on these two

4. Limitations

4.1. Except for use within the scope and by means directly stipulated for by this License or the law of the Russian Federation, the User shall not modify, decompile, disassemble, decrypt and perform other actions with the object code of the Software, aimed at obtaining source codes of the Software and/or information on the implementation of the algorithms used in the Software, to create derivative works with the use of the Software, as well as to fulfill (to allow to conduct) other use of the Software, without the written consent from the Rightholder. The User may make a modification of the Software solely for his or hers own use and reverse engineering for debugging such modifications. The User shall not be entitled to distribute, communicate, make the Software available for the general public or otherwise use such modifications, except as for his or hers own use.

4.2. The User shall not, without the written consent from the Rightholder, reproduce, distribute and make available to the public, the Software in any form and by any means, not directly stipulated for by this License, including within the collections of software products, with the offering of other programs, settings and other products, regardless of purposes of such use.

It would mean we can not modify the setting of the program, nor distribute such modifications, hence we would notbe bale to make protable.

do you have the developers permission?

As I read the license you are not permitted to modify or re-distribute

If you read carefully you'll see you are not modifying anything "WITH THE ONLY PURPOSE OF OBTAINING INFORMATION ON HOW ALGORITHMS ARE IMPLEMENTED". You only aim it to install it into a folder, that's it.

Being a negative jerk does not make you superior.

Focus on solving people's problems instead of pretending you are some sort of 'licensing cop', U freak. Fux sake, the 'American' government is @ war against Russia. No 'regulation' regarding the rights of Russians or Russian companies within Russia (real or imagined) will B enforced by this government. Get a clue, jackazz.

Copyright law is very clear on what is and is not permitted with software. The Yandex Portable browser package was done without permission, is a violation of the EULA and copyright law, and was removed. The above poster is a forum moderator and was doing his job as he should.

Please familiarize yourself with the forum guidelines before posting again. Posts such as this are a violation of the guidelines.

John T. Haller,

as I understand it, the reason for the discussion is that the site refuses to make a portable version Yandex.browser. But Google chrome do, although the license agreement is the same as that of Yandex.browser.

License Violation

The version packaged above was bundling the Yandex browser without permission from the publisher in violation of the EULA.

Google Chrome Portable is a live installer that downloads Chrome from Google during install as that is the way the devs preferred us to do it.

If there is enough interest in a real version, we'd consider it. I'm not sure what advantages it has as it seems to just be a reskinned Chromium-based browser (there are hundreds of these now).

Dear John T. Haller

Yandex.browser makes by a big company. It's definitely not just reskinned Chromium-based browser. In my opinion, it combines interesting technologies and solutions, and becomes quite unique.
Especially in terms of user protection (perhaps, able to fight for the first places).
You can read a brief description here:
https://www.yandex.com/support/yabrowser/security/virus-protection.xml
and some here
https://company.yandex.com/press_center/press_releases/2015/2015-09-17.xml

And here is the link to the official website:

Chromium Based

Yandex.browser is definitely Chromium-based, so it likely has no real difference from Chrome, Chromium, Iron, Opera, etc in terms of page rendering as they are all the same browser engine underneath. Yandex does use Opera's Turbo technology, something Chrome does not yet have but Opera does.

The virus protection is minimal as it just checks it against a list rather than full virus scans. Most Windows PCs are running Windows Defender/Security Essentials which does a far better job and Firefox, Chrome, etc all utilize.

I'd be curious to see how well Yandex's Safe Browsing alternative works. Google's is by far the largest and best maintained. It's also the most widely used in the world, an order of magnitude more widely used than Yandex's. Even Firefox utilizes it.

I think I have a contact from Yandex from way back, so I may reach out and see if they're interested.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Chromium Based

Yandex also is a chromium-based browser like Chrome (like Opera), and this is not a hidden feature. So, it all add-ons (extensions) created for Chrome (and Opera) also applies to Yandex.

That's the most important difference between the two browsers: 1) Chrome does not support java plug-in. 2) If you use Chrome and have made some changes to the default settings (for example, if you change the default search engine), these changes certainly will be reset by Google after a short period of time, if you do not synchronize this settings logging in your Google account on the Chrome browser. In the browser's settings window also will show the following warning:

"Chrome detected that some of your settings were corrupted by another program and reset them to their original defaults"

Google is lying above and this process is a hidden fraud carried out by Google...

So, you should necessarily have a Google account and must be logged in your Google account using Chrome browser (thus, Google can collect more specific information about you and your computer...).

However, there is no such nonsense in Yandex browser.

This Yandex portable (by altervista) you give its link above works well. However, a major problem arises after you start using it:

It is doing automatically download new setup file of Yandex and silent installation with this file in the system disk (C:) without your knowledge and permission (This process is not a self-update of Yandex portable).

Such problem did not occur, when using the Yandex portable by 'thumbapps'; moreover, this is a more recent version (15.12.2490.3614) than the version (15.10.2454.3387) created by 'altervista':

Note: If the manufacturer does not allow to creation Yandex portable by portableapps.com, I strongly condemn the manufacturer of Yandex.

Mr. John T. Haller,

Yandex portable by 'altervista' its link given above using YOUR LOGO. There's now a new version (47.0.2526.2568). But that certainly does not work now and the following warning appears:

"An error has occured and Yandex.Browser can no longer continue working. Relaunch?"

The use of your logo in a non-functioning software is not cool. I hope you can solve this cheesy problem.
