I've just posted a pre-release of OpenOffice.org Portable 2.0.4. New in this version:
- OpenOffice.org updated to 2.0.4
- Bug with individual app launchers not passing parameters fixed
- Vista compatible installer and launcher
- Added the ability to use a Documents directory in the root of your portable drive when your OpenOfficePortable directory is within a PortableApps directory in the root
Download OpenOffice.org Portable 2.0.4 Pre-Release 1
Please give it a try and post your findings.
Side Note: I ran a test to see if compressing OOP into a 7-zip self-extractor that wasn't set as a solid archive would improve install time when installing directly to a portable device. It took about 9 and a half minutes to install to my 4gb corsair flash voyager either way. The progress dialog was smoother on the non-solid archive... but it wound up being 80mb as compared to 65mb. So, I'm sticking with the solid archive.
Is it possible to tray the launcher only?
Now (and for the next days) I'm surfing with a dialup connenction...
I tried to extract directly to my 1GB U3 Cruzer Micro and it stopped @ 75% progress then hung up.
I then tried to extract to the local pc and copy to my flash drive. 1st attempt crashed my computer, but I may have had too many programs running. Second attempt to extract and copy worked just fine.
I know the idea is to keep things as portable as possible, but this is a large file to extract directly to a flash drive. You might note that somewhere that if you extract and then copy and paste to your drive it might work better.
I will check it out now and report back.

Actually, I timed it out as a solid archive, a non-solid archive and a direct copy to the flash drive. In each case, it took around 9.5 mins for the particular drive I was testing on (an avg speed drive). The Cruzer Micro is either average or a bit below average speed-wise.
It just takes a **VERY LONG** time to copy 2,369 files in 318 folders totaling 169MB. Even doing a straight file copy to my buddy's Geil David (the fastest commercially-available flash drive with separate read and write controllers) took 5 minutes.
Update: Maybe I'll add a note in the installer itself. The screen could say:
37% Installing (may take up to 10+ mins)
The only installers that would really need this are the big ones... OpenOffice.org Portable and the Portable Apps Suite.

Not sure exactly what you did different, but it opens in less than a second (after the splash screen). For some reason I cannot find my Spanish dictionary. I'll try to install it again, if that fails I'll let you know.

I think some of that is the speedups in 2.0.4. One of the things OpenOffice.org has been working on is startup time. So, we see the benefit of that in the portable package, too.

I tried to do an offline install of the dictionary but it failed, but I think it's not related to the portable version 'cause I've tried it before from a local install and it also failed. But it finally installed correctly (online) and working correctly. thanks.

I had not yet updated my local OO to 2.0.4 yet and this version is definitely faster.

hi
tested succesfully here, with french dictionnary and stuff.
Starts faster indeed.
I only make basic documents, but so far, its perfect.
thanks John
It took about 5 minutes to install to the USB key (Astone 2G, for reference).
Has been running fine every time I've used it since, on the home PC.
Quick. Easy. Simple. Lovely!
No wizards work. When I look under Tools/Options/Jave find 1.5.0_09
Everything works under regular desktop install of Base v2.0.4 using same database file.
Files were made with Base 2.0.3 Portable.
Using win xp sp2

I accidentally compressed the classes files, which breaks the wizards. This will be fixed in the final release.

Wow, that's fast. It actually installed faster than Gaim Beta, and loads about as fast. Works well for me in my limited testing.
I downloaded it to my hard drive and expanded it there. Then I copied the expanded files to to my ultra-slow Sandisk Cruzer Mini 1G. I lost track, but it took between 8 and 15 minutes to copy over.
I then ran the application from the flash drive. The licensing thing worked fine.
It launches in about 1/2 - 2/3 the time that 2.0.3 took.
The Writer works fine. I've got one "add on" that loads pictures into Impress, called "Photo Album." Works fine, too.
No problems noted.

In the spirit of giving in return for receiving, I have the following feedback.
My system Acer aspire 1700 Desknote 1.6Ghz P4 512Mb Ram, Windoze XP Home, Kingston 1Gb memory stick, fresh install of this beta pre -release.
Having trouble opening pre-prepared and saved files on memory stick via the startup wizard. Also getting "Not Responding" message in title bar while awaiting file to open. Original file MS Powerpoint presentation, Opened, edited and saved as ODF with no issue. Original MS powerpoint file will open with no issue, but all the non responsive messages and "lockups" come from trying to open the same file saved as .odf.
Hope this is of some use. Let me know if more is required. Will continue testing.
Sorry.... extra info. File saved in "root" F:\directory of memory stick, Open office installed under F:\Peter\Open Office Portable
The install worked fine but had to re-install my dictionaries.
I would have thought if you install it over the previous version the dictionaries would be available in the new version.
Other than the dictionaries I could not find any other errors.
Regards
Paul
As OOo ships with the Bitstream Vera font family, most of my Documents are based on that fonts (to be System / Platform independend). Unfortunately these are not available with OOo portable.
Maybe these could be included in share/fonts/truetype. Download from http://ftp.gnome.org/pub/GNOME/sources/ttf-bitstream-vera/1.10/ttf-bitst...
this will add approx 580k to the unpacked OOo Portable.
I have edited both text documents and slide presentations with the beta version with no problems. I don't use many fonts on purpose, so I did not run into any of those problems. I could not tell the difference from 2.0.3, which is a good thing...
