This is my first post here.
I have been using Firefox Portable for some time. I have Firefox Portable 21 installed and have been using it since its release (and have used portable since version 15 or so). I have always updated over the top of the previous version with not problems until now. What I have experienced and my attempts to resolve:
*downloaded Firefox 22 Portable to hard drive as usual
*closed all browsers
*ran install and received error, "Folder not valid, choose valid folder in Program Files or a sub-folder" (or similar)
*checked permissions on folder, running as Admin, all OK
*3 or 4 more attempts, same message/problem
*deleted previous Firefox 22 Portable download and downloaded again, this time using IE (YUCK!)
*rebooted system, same message/problem
*set up new folder (empty) in Program Files, same message/problem
*tested system by using full Firefox 22 installer downloaded from Mozilla this morning, everything worked.
Based on the above, I can only conclude a problem with the Firefox 22 Portable installer.
Anyone else having problems? Any suggestions?
Program Files has never been a valid or supported location for using portable software due to the way Windows works and the way many apps work. You can read a full explanation as to why here. The PortableApps.com Installer has disallowed installations to Program Files for well over a year now.
You should move your portable apps to C:\PortableApps. So, create that directory. Then, if you have Firefox Portable in C:\Program Files\FirefoxPortable or similar, simply move it to C:\PortableApps.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
Thanks for the assist.
I did not know that I should not attempt to install Firefox Portable in Program Files. Thanks for that info. I have another browser that gives the option at installation to install the portable version (not a Portable Apps build) that successfully installed and updates the portable version in the Program Files folder, so Portable Apps must have a restriction in their installation file.
You jogged my aging memory, and I remembered that I had originally installed FP in another folder, not Program Files, but with the other portable browser there, I moved FP 21 into the Program Files folder and it ran fine. Just updating to FP 22 brought the problem to light.
I have now moved FP 21 to folder C:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable\ and successfully updated it to FP 22. I have also moved my other portable browser to a folder under C:\PortableApps\ .
Thanks for your help and explanation.
Glad to hear it worked properly for you. If you're not using the platform, the installers will still automatically find your apps in C:\PortableApps when you run them, so it'll make upgrading easier. And if you decide to add the platform later, all your apps will already be in the right place.![Smile](https://portableapps.com/sites/all/modules/smiley/packs/kolobok/smile.gif)
