Sunbird Portable 0.3 Pre-Release 1 (Testers Needed)

I've just posted a pre-release of Sunbird Portable 0.3 for testing. New in this version:

- Sunbird updated to 0.3 Final
- Installer and launcher now Vista compatible
- Added intelligent startup for faster second starts when run from the same location
- Added license agreement to first start

Note: Upgrading data from 0.2 has not been tested (and 0.2 and 0.3 use totally different methods to store calendar data, both local and remote), so please backup your 0.2 profile before upgrading to 0.3. Before upgrading, you should run Sunbird Portable 0.2 from its current location to update the profile and then extract Sunbird Portable 0.3 over it to upgrade.

Sunbird Portable 0.3 Pre-Release 1

Please give it a try and post back any results.

Thanks,
John

Portable Sunbird

I will give it a go.
As I like the improved facilties of 0.3 I have installed the non portable version on my hard drive as well as using PSB 0.2 on USB.

0.3beta SBP wasn't stable enough for me.

UPX compression not implemented?

I've noticed on the beta Mozilla apps (Firefox & Sunbird) and the two released Thunderbird packages the EXEs & DLLs aren't UPX compressed, but all the other beta packages available are (for the most part). I was wondering if this is done for a technical reason, possibly an oversight, or maybe you just didn't know that fact. Smile

I wrote a script to traverse and UPX compress all EXE/DLLs in a target directory and I'm seeing a nice ~33% reduction in overall space used by a portable app.

Examples:

Sunbird: before = 19MB & after = 13MB
Firefox: before = 19.5MB & after = 13.6MB
Thunderbird before = 20.5MB & after = 14.7MB
TBird+Enigmail+GPG before = 26.1MB & after = 19.3MB

Every bit of space helps on a memory stick. Smile

I can send you my script if you'd like.

Mozilla not compressed

None of the Mozilla apps are compressed anymore. There are two reasons for this:

1. UPX compression breaks the partial updates used by Firefox, Thunderbird and Sunbird as new versions come out, forcing it to do a full update (which then wouldn't be compressed anyway)

2. Alteration of Mozilla binaries is not permitted under their trademark license

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thanx John. #1 makes sense

Thanx John. #1 makes sense once you explained it and I didn't know #2.

Love the website, packages you kick out, and effort you take to help everyone else out by producing these types of apps.

Gave it the full checkup..

and this is what I found.

1. Cannot upgrade from v2.0. Tried the above method of backing up and opening then upgrading, but all it seems to do is show the licence screen, then shows the splash and but nothing opens. I checked using taskmanager, and it seems that it closes itself after the splash.

2. I imported my seven ical calendars from v2.0 without a hitch. Added a new calendar and added categories and worked fine.

3. Installed extensions without a problem. Moved from harddrive to USB without a hitch.

4. Sync with Rainlendar and worked perfectly.

So far so good, and again, great work!

some problem printig

Hallo i think i'm not the only one who has problem printing his week plan with portable sunbird, i hope you can improve these part of software, because it don't looks good.

in "print a calendar" the date is setted as "From" to "from" instead of "from" "To",and the list is not the best way of showing a caledar to my boss...
so i hope you can improve the printing way...asap.

Sorry, wrong number.

That sounds like feedback for the Mozilla programmers of Sunbird, not this website.
