Yes, I found the now-closed and long-running thread about this error message. My issue is slightly different, or perhaps here is new information.

My ongoing problem is with System Explorer. I completely deleted the entire System Explorer folder and replaced it with a fresh install. I'm still getting the error!

I had thought the program startup status would have been set or flagged somewhere in the app data or ini... BUT this seems to suggest that the error is held in the registry instead (which makes me wonder about portability, but that's not at issue here).

Can anyone tell me how to find this status in the registry and reset it so System Explorer will run?

-- Also I have no idea what is meant by "start [the program] manually." Makes no difference if I go in through, say, PAM or PStart to run the program from a shortcut, or go into the PortableApps folder and open the program's exe directly. Why would "manually" make any difference?

I get error this all the time!

Whenever I take out my flash drive and forget to eject/close running apps, then next time I try to run it, it gives that error. What it means by manually is that you need to just start it again. It works for me!

I'm wondering if filesystem

I'm wondering if filesystem format plays a role here. Like if you use exFAT which is designed to work a lot more fluid with pulling a USB drive out without having to go through the unmounting process would be less sensitive to this issue.

Nope

Just close your apps. That's all there is to it. Close them. If you either (1) unsafe eject the drive [note: NEVER do this with apps running from a drive], (2) shutdown Windows with the launchers running, or (3) allow Windows to hibernate with an app running on an external drive... the launcher will not be able to clean up after the app. That's what that message means. If you properly close your apps before doing any of the above, you'll never see the message.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
