Basic photo viewer/editor which supports extra (ex. Russian) characters?

Not sure if I post it at the right place:

Neither XnView not IrfanView seems to support file name or folders containing some extra (but otherwise standard?) characters such as Russian. In the case of XnView I was told it is intentional, no plan for support. Strange. Basic Windows built in viewer displays these files like a charm.

any solution for this? I don't need much of an editor, mostly just a basic viewer. If no IrfanView or XnView then what else?

Unicode

What you're referring to is Unicode support. As opposed to the standard ANSI set of characters. Old Windows 95/98/Me wasn't Unicode. Windows 2000 and up is. Some of these old apps that have been around for a while don't support Unicode. Not just because they're that old, but because it took the toolsets a while to upgrade to Unicode. That's why the original PortableApps.com tools in 2005 didn't support it (we did custom versions for each language that would only properly display if Windows was in the same language).

Personally, I don't use image viewers other than thumbnails in Explorer and do my image editing in an image editor (either Photoshop or GIMP depending on what I'm working on).

If you really want an image viewer, XnView and IrfanView don't support Unicode. Neither does PhotoFiltrer. JPEGView and PicPick do, though. So, you could try those and see if they meet your needs.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Thanks for your

Thanks for your explanation!

Personally I do or did quick image edits on Xn or Irfan. But I try your recommendations!
