one add-on killed another

I was happily using CL Pics add-on in my FFP 3.6 until I decided to install Thumbnail Zoom Plus. Not only it did not work, it killed CL Pics Multiple reinstalls of several versions of CL Pics and deleted TZP did not help. Neither did system restore and Flash plug-in update. I disabled some other add-ons that were all cooperating previously - no luck. I tried a saved version of FFP on another drive - nothing. It seems that TZP changed something in Win. XP or on the laptop. CL's own pics open in Thumbnail and Gallery view, but not in List view. Please, help - thanks

ps please, don't suggest updating FF version: all my equipment is old and it all worked before that TZP extension

Publisher, Unsupported

You'd need to contact the extension maker. All we do is portablize Firefox itself. Some extensions don't play nicely and install things locally.

The 3.x version of Firefox is unsupported, dangerously insecure (any website can remote take over your machine) and long-dead at this point. As such, we can't assist you with it. It's likely the extension publisher won't either, but you can ask them.

Can I install the new version

Can I install the new version of FFP on the same SD card and keep the old one or will it cause problems? Last time I updated I had many issues to deal with so I want to try out the new version before I switch, thanks

Alongside

You can install it alongside. Just manually alter the directory. So if you have your current FFP installed to X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable, just make a copy of that entire folder to X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortableOld. Then install the current FFP to X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable. It should upgrade and preserve your bookmarks, cookies and passwords (though none of your extensions will work off the bat). If it fails, just delete X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable and rename X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortableOld to X:\PortableApps\FirefoxPortable.

I would *highly* suggest making a backup to your local hard drive or another location first as well, just to be safe.

Note that I am unsure if the current Firefox can upgrade from the old Firefox 3 or not. The upgrade processes should still be included in the modern code, but it's so old it likely hasn't been tested in a while. We can't really assist you with this process any further as a result.

I have a 1 gig SD card with 650 mb of free space and win XP SP3 on Compaq nw8440 laptop that's working on IDE HD. Is it advisable to install the latest FFP version on that card and that system and keep it along with the old version? Don't I need more space to operate and prevent problems? I have a 32 gig card, but this old laptop does not see it. I also have a 2 gig microSD if needed.

Fine

It should be just fine on your existing card. Firefox itself uses about 100MB for its install and bad URL database.

OK, so the latest FFP version

OK, so the latest FFP version should work OK?
Meanwhile something inexplicable is happening with add-ons. I tried a previous saved version of FFP on another drive and used it on a different laptop not affected by changes from a new add-on installation and the add-on CL Pics that worked before did not! How's that possible? I emailed creators of both extensions, but they don't reply. I tried to register at add-on site, got a link to login, but when I try it says I did something that's not allowed every time. What's up?

Can't Assist

As mentioned, we can't assist you with extensions for FFP 3.6 in any way any longer. I barely remember how the extensions system worked at the time (it's a different setup now and the portable launcher handles it differently). The extensions you have issue with may not even have a proper update path from 3.6 to 25.0 any longer either. And the authors likely can't assist you at this point. Whenever you remain with outdated software long past its supported time, you run the risk of being stuck with it and having to start over settings/data-wise.

It honestly may be easiest to export your bookmarks and then import them to a fresh FFP 25.0 install and install any extensions you need fresh. You'd lose your history, saved passwords and cookies, though. I've done this a couple times with Firefox over the years to get rid of the cruft from long-dead versions like 1.5 and 3.6.
