Although I've never had the real urge to try TotalCommander out, you might like these portable alternatives.

TotalCommander comes with it's own portable-program by the author.
http://www.ghisler.com/usbinst.htm for USB and/or U3. The 'tc2usb' tool sure works like a charm!
It's the best file manager I know. (And one of the best programs in general - I know nothing that's more universal), but it has some small portability problems - just because it sometimes communicates with system through explorer.
But the authors USB tool is nothing important - there's an easy (and a little smaller) solution with one .ini entry. Search
