Apps Initialize, then Commit Seppuku

just within the last few weeks, i've noticed that, when i start a portable app on a particular machine (brand new in the last 45 days) that an app will start, display its splash screen, then look like it's going to be ready for user interaction.

within seconds, the app window will disappear from the screen, and the only indication it is still running is an entry in process explorer (or other task manager). these entries cannot be killed by process explorer or any other task killer, though i have to say i've tried.

any other attempt to restart them creates more copies that can't be killed.

i'm at a loss. programs (like bigsol, whatchanged, etc) that have never exhibited problems before are failing spectacularly, and only a reboot (so far, anyway) has made those entries disappear. even an attempt to kill the platform exe and all of its children fails to kill these processes.

have you heard of anything, like anti-virus programs, or odd dotnet processes, that could cause something like this?

thanks Smile

Which application are you referring to?

Drive or Virus

This sounds like an issue with the drive the apps reside on. It could also be a connection to this drive. As in a short or hardware issue causing the drive to disconnect and reconnect quickly. It should be scanned for errors, to start. Try installing fresh copies of the apps on the local hard drive (say right to the Desktop directory) to confirm a drive issue.

If it's not the drive, it could be a virus. I'm not as familiar with one that would produce these effects, though.

Note that I removed [bug] from this topic. That's used for tracking confirmed bugs in our apps. That is highly unlikely a case here.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
