MP3 & Podcast Downloads

Since updating Firefox Portable I can no longer download MP3 files. When I go to a podcast page and click the link to download it opens a new page and plays the file within Firefox using VLC. There is no way to right click on the link to download the file nor do anything other than play it within Firefox

I had this same problem with the non-portable version and according to Mozilla Support found out it has something to do with how Firefox 26 handles Windows XP which is my operating system. The instructions to fix the issue said to go to about:config and change the settings to false for:

media.autoplay.enabled
media.windows-media-foundation.enabled

This fixed the problem for the regular version of Firefox but not the portable version.

I went to Firefox Portable options and changed all of them having to do with media to "ALWAYS ASK". This also did not fix the problem for Firefox Portable.

Any thoughts?

The version of Firefox, when

The version of Firefox, when used with Windows XP, ignores the about:config settings you have set. I've the same problem.

Try the config entry "media.directshow.enabled"

MP3 Dowload Problems

I already had "media.directshow.enabled" marked false.

I was able to overcome this problem on the non-portable version using it on my Desktop with XP, but the portable version will not download an MP3 and will only play it within Firefox.

Downloaded with Firefox Portable

Out of curiosity, I've just tested downloading mp3 files from a site with direct download links posted, using Firefox PE 26.0, and 27.0.1 on Win-XP, without any problems.

If you'd provide a link to some public accessible site with mp3 files which you are not able to download, and the version of Firefox Portable you're using, I could test that for you.

I didn't expect a follow-up on this. I really appreciate it and have a whole new attitude towards PortableApps and the members.

This is about as basic as I can get for direct DL link. Try any on this page:

I am using FF 27.0.0.1 on Win-XP SP3.

Tested again with provided links

I've run several tests downloading from that site you've provided the link to, and again, without having any issues.

First of all, same as previously, I was able to download the files via the context Save Link As... menu item, without changing any preferences in Firefox.

Then, to be able to download with left-clicking, I only needed to change just one preference in about:config, that is, setting the media.directshow.enabled to false.

That would be all about, except, initially the dialog proposes to Open with instead of saving the link, so the Save File option must be selected manually, which then sticks for next runs, without needing to be selected again.

For testing, besides some modified copies, I've used completely fresh installs of Firefox PE 27.0.1, one run from my local HDD, and the other run from a flash drive, however using the same PC, with administrative rights, OS Win XP, SP3, Home Edition, without the latest updates, localization en-US for both OS and Firefox. No regular Firefox installed.

In my previous tests, and current, I was downloading from this site:

http://mp3skull.com/mp3/samples.html

You may wish to try it too, should you run some further tests.
