Hi All.
I am totally confused on the licensing part and I need some clarification.
I am creating a shareware USB portable software and I would like to bundle few other portable software from portableapps.com from different categories and also Firefox Portable. As I understand these are GPL.
I can do the following:
1. Put all software in my installer and provide it to user to install it.
2. I can also make two installers, one for my shareware and one for GPL software.
Which is the right way of doing it from licensing point of view?
I also want to use my own launcher/application and provide a link to these software, so from my shareware there would be a link to run the GPL software. is that Ok?
Thanks for your responses.
Michael
Most of our apps are open source and can be redistributed without restriction, but there are some apps that can't be redistributed (such as freeware, or open source apps containing trademarked branding) for which we have specifically obtained permission to do so (but that permission does not extend beyond portableapps.com).
Firefox as an example is open source, but Mozilla's trademarks cannot be redistributed without permission from them (which we have obtained). BabelPad as another example is freeware and requires permission from the app's creator for us to redistribute (once again which we have obtained).
Firefox may only be redistributed as is in our binary installer. You can't take the files out and redistribute them in your own installer without the express permission of Mozilla. Many popular open source apps like Firefox, PortableApps.com, Debian, Ubuntu, etc have trademarks on the names and logos and can't be used. For apps like Firefox, we have a specific licensing agreement in place with Mozilla allowing us to repackage it as Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition. This license does not extend to third parties. This applies to open source apps like Firefox, Iron and Thunderbird. It also applies to the freeware apps like Opera, Wise utilities, Iobit utilities, etc that we have specific licensing agreements for.
As for our other apps, anything bearing our logo or trademark may not be repackaged in or with proprietary apps either. This applies to PortableApps.com Installer packages as well as to the PortableApps.com Launcher.
If you are looking to start a business of some sort and are interested in licensing our software, we do make that available. You just need to contact our business development folks.
