PAF Launcher Editor v4

PAF Launcher Editor is a program used for creating/editing a PortableApps.com App Launcher. It simplifies things by making most options point and click. Using this editor would prevent you from making mistakes that you would otherwise do if you were manually typing up the launcher.ini file.

A few things

A few things I picked up:

Launch tab

  • The default value for DirectoryMoveOK and SupportsUNC needs to be "warn", and you need to save a value of "no"
  • The keys RunAsAdmin8 or RunAsAdmin8.1 don't exist, and even if RunAsAdmin8 were needed in the future I doubt we would ever have to make a distinction between 8 and 8.1
  • There are also no MinOS or MaxOS values for 8 and 8.1
  • The default value for CleanTemp, SingleAppInstance, WaitForProgram and WaitForOtherInstances needs to be true, and you need to be able to save a false value

Activate tab

  • There are no options for .NET stuff in the launcher.ini, and since the appinfo.ini covers everything needed for .NET support there may never be .NET options here. Even if there were in the future they wouldn't mirror the Java settings.
  • Registry and XML checkboxes are disabled. Since you are automatically setting them based on other data, showing them here is kind of counter-intuitive. I would be more inclined to enable the user to interact with these checkboxes and use them to toggle the state of the things they effect (registry on/off would toggle the visibility of the RegistryKeys, RegistryValueWrite, RegistryCleanup tab buttons, XML on/off would toggle the visibility/enabled state of the XML options in the FileWriteN tab), but that might just be me.

LiveMode tab

  • CopyData isn't supported, unless it is re-added in the future you just shouldn't show it.

Environment tab

  • You have a typo: "Pre-congigured" instead of "Pre-configured"
  • You shouldn't add in the extra slashes for the DoubleBackslash, ForwardSlash or java.utils.prefs modifiers - you are just forcing users to delete them
  • You are missing %PAL:LastDriveLetter%
  • The list of available variables would be much more usable (I think) if they were ordered/grouped logically, not alphabetically

RegistryKeys, RegistryValueWrite, RegistryCleanup tabs

  • Setting anything here always give two Registry=true lines in the resulting launcher.ini

ServiceN tab

  • Services are disabled in the Launcher, so you would be better off leaving the tab out, and add it back in if/when services are ever enabled again.

Stuff that would be really handy

  • Being able to select the path to save/load the file
  • Having a dropdown or button always available that allowed selecting an environment variable and placing it in the currently focused text input

Probably my biggest issue is that there is no way to view what you are creating until you hit save. It might just be me, but I'm not likely to use it for development because it isn't always intuitive what is going to be created from what I've entered, especially in the registry tabs.

It would also be better if you provided a PAF package of this app.

license question

I have read a few licenses but kind of missing the info that I want. I would like to distribute my apps like this one, free for anyone to use. (eg. users can make copies and re distribute it also make portable versions of it etc. but not sell also I don't want to share my source code.) What is the best license for that? free but closed source.

Other Post, Open Source

See my other post for licensing guidance. As for this app itself, if it uses any of our open source components, it has to stay under that specific license. If you're releasing anything as freeware yourself publicly (aka not associated with PortableApps.com and not open source), you won't be able to use our trademarks.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

thank you for the reply.

thank you for the reply. These are the apps I want to release here but not as paf cause I don't have time to maintain it, they are portable by nature but would like to release it with a license that allows anyone to make a paf version. As for trademarks, I don't think that they use any of your trademarks, but you can check and see.
