Portableapps Backup Option : Just the Apps?

Being that you dont have a forum for PA backup(other than the locked forum for RC1), I'll be posting this here. I just want to suggest an option to backup the PortableApps folder, because I can backup the whole drive, documents directory, and the App data, but not all of my apps, and just the apps. Thanks.

Considering it

I was considering adding that in as an option, actually. I modified your subject to be a bit more descriptive so people might peak in here and comment on it (hope you don't mind). Smile

The logic behind excluding it originally is that most people would probably be interested in either backing up their data (Documents or AppData) or the apps and data (Whole Drive) on a regular basis. It isn't as critical to update the apps as you can always reinstall them all (easy with the suite downloads) and then restore your data. I was thinking about a PortableApps (w/ Data) and Documents option for folks that also keep other stuff on their drive that they don't want to backup on a regular basis (as an example, I have an InstallFiles directory that I keep installation files for AdAwate, SpyBot, Firefox, AVG and other utilities in to aid in cleaning/fixing people's PCs.)

Anybody else have any thoughts on this?

Would not hurt.

If it is not too difficult to do.

You might even consider a custom option.

This would allow users to select which files or apps they want to back up.

This might cause you an issue though, because I would assume that the backup option used preset paths which is one of the reasons for having a common structure for the Apps and PAM.

I would only PortableApps could be backed up under a Apps/Documents only option for the same reason.

Not all portable apps are PAF compatible

There are quite a few programs that I use that are not PAF compatible, And the reason I'm asking for this option, more than anything, is because of some (old school) games that I have on my drive. Right now I can even remember where I got them from, And I tried searching for them again, but did not find them. I just think its easier to restore my apps rather than having to search the internet to find everything that I have. But, John, I would love it if you could have this option.

How would the backup know?

How would the backup program know which .exe's to copy?

The program is designed to search out the PAF files and folders right now. I say if you want to backup or archive specific programs you probably should do it manually with something like 7-zip.

PortableApps directory

It would backup the whole PortableApps directory which, presumably, is where you'd have all your apps and data... whether they're PAF apps or not.

Some use.

I guess some would find a use for it.

Especially for us not-so-geeky geeks and uber-geeks, more options are always better.

Not click and choose

but instead the whole "PortableApps" directory. PABackup does not need to find out which are PAF files and which are not.

More Options

Regarding "more options" it is usually better and definitely more flexible.
I would also be nice to allow the backup routine to contain a list of other user-editable relative directories for other files & stuff on the drive.
You could then have the option to select separate radio buttons for each backup option as well as select separate backup files or a single combined backup.
Currently I use a bat file and backup each profile by profile name and date in separate files.

The hard coded directory names are a pain for me personally as well, currently I have an "Apps" directory for all the Portable Apps and a "Tools" directory for not so portable or packaged installer apps and a "Data" directory for all the profiles all residing in the root of my USB drive.
As this layout is echoed over 3 different fixed disks as well as several removable drives which I selectively synchronize, changing it is a pain.
