Lots of forum spam posting lately...

Please, feel free to implement more stringent spam controls if you like (as long as they don't involve a CAPTCHA).

CAPTCHA

The only solution we're not using is Mollom, which will require a CAPTCHA for nearly everything you post. It doesn't work well, it's buggy, and the admin tools are incredibly simplistic.

This isn't a standard spambot. This one is misconfigured and acting as a semi DOS setup. Each IP that sends this spam is permablocked. As are the accounts used. And all are reported and publicly posted as StopForumSpam.com so that other sites using the service aren't affected.

Almost all of it is coming from Indonesia. So, we could just cut the country off, too.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Edit the words

An option I use on the 911cd forum is using the bad word filter for editing the SPAM words. The word Kitchen becomes SPAM, for example. The same happens for SPAM links posted also.

Eventually we remove the posts but the poster gets no advantage posting on our site, not even a bump in search engine ratings.

Drop

The thing is, posts in forum comments that are spammed decrease your search engine rankings. There's no advantage to it anymore.

I've added in some new automated defenses and blocked additional disposable email services they were using as well. We may outright block goo.gl shortened links as well as other link shorteners. They serve no purpose in a forum other than for spamming.
