surfing software

My IT department has installed what they call "surfing software". they claim this allows them to monitor where we go on the internet. If I'm using portable firefox running on a flash drive can the software detect that?

If by "monitor", they mean

If by "monitor", they mean track http requests, then no.

Be careful

You have been warned. Your IT department was gracious enought to warn you that your internet use was being tracked. Heed that warning. They may have installed a firewall like monitor on the main feed through either a server or router. Firefox or even something like TorPark will not protect your internet usage from being monitored by your employer.

If you are using Tor, isn't

If you are using Tor, isn't the outgoing connection encrypted? Does that mask which sites you are looking at? I guess you still need to contact a DNS server though - I don't know?

Yes

It's encrypted, but a well-run network can easily tell that you're running Tor. From which machine. And who is logged in at the time. This would most likely be against your school's policy and could get you in trouble.

Yeah, that's what I thought.

Yeah, that's what I thought. You would be able to see lots of traffic on whichever port it uses, but not be able to tell what that traffic was. I agree, enough to get you in trouble!

This is most likely HTTP

This is most likely HTTP requests. What you probably want to do is change your user agent just in case it checks for this, then they will see you are running firefox. Skin firefox to look like IE too.
Our school has monitoring software for http requests and also screen broadcast/monitoring software. Can't get around either of them.

You could unplug the ethernet cable. After all, they can only track what's on their network. Blum

Maybe if everyone in this

Maybe if everyone in this forum with wireless changes the SSID to PortableApps, and the Password to IsTheSnizzle, then everywhere we go, there should be at least one person who we can connect to....

lol, that should probably work! Smile

Java runtime environment on chat

When I get into the web through Firefox (installed on my USB pen drive 1 gigabite,
I go to my preferite chat (an Italian one since I am Italian).
The chat is at www.tgcom.it

If I enter the chat (even on Java light) i get in but I cannot read either conversations nor the nicks. In few words I can see the commands (Immages, Rooms etc.etc) but the rest is blank.

Can I get some help / tips on how to overcome the problem?

Appreciate
Tony

New thread

Please don't tack on unrelated posts to a current thread (this is known as thread hijacking). Please start a new topic. Your issue has nothing at all to do with net use tracking.
