PortableApps needs to support undo for application updates

Once again, I was dismayed by changes to Firefox when I used PortableApps to update from Firefox 28 to 29. There are never any warnings about what the new version of Firefox is going to break, you just have to hope that you can find enough new or revised add-ons to make it still usable, or switch to Chrome or IE. But Firefox isn't the only portable application that is fragile and frequently "breaks" (i.e. no longer does exactly what you want it to) when a new update is installed.

Please add support to automatically backup old applications before installing upgrades so that you are guaranteed to be able to get back to the old one if you don't like the changes. You already have a manual backup feature. You just need to make sure that a backup is available for the apps when the user is most likely to need one.

Thanks!

Your dismay underwhelms me

Here PA asks me if I want to update FF or another app.

If I am concerned about the possible change I make a backup.

Since when did it become someone else's responsibility to make backups for you?

my ennui!

Adding an automatic backup instead of the manual one would take up too much space on my harddrive and cause me ennui!

You can easily find the older versions of the FF or just look at your add-ons list and see what level they are compatible with. I didn't go from 27 to 28 for many many month because my fav add-on wasn't updated. eventually it was when 29 came out. I've also just reinstalled an older version of FF on the newer one then.

Don't be an uberPr∅. They are stinky.

Wow

Had some great games on my computer then Microsoft went to Windows P from 98 they stopped working I think Micorosoft should consider to keep supporting 98 as I am not happy and can not play my games

Wait I went to XP nw some stuff is not supported in Windows 8 Better add XP support to my list for Microsoft?

Pint is this Programs change and requirements change and if programmers of add-ons do not keep up to date whose fault its The main program or the Add-on Developers?

To put it another way I have a very old chain saw that only ran with leaded gas. Should the entire world be forced to keep making leaded gas just because I want it? Or do I decide time to move forwarded and progress with the rest of the world?

In My case I move forward or find alternatives that I do Like Heck one of the reasons I found Portable Apps was because I had heard the Outlook Express was no longer going to be available after XP BUT I eanted its format so bad so I used Thunderbird, and I used it and used it and used it until I learned it and liked it to the point I switched all my email in P to it. And Now that is what I use on win 8

Personally, I like 29.

Yes, I had a problem or two with some things that didn't work "properly". However, the problems in question seem to have originated with release 26 or 27, not 29. The overall internals of 29 are actually better. Yes, some features were removed or hidden, but some add-on devs have worked to restore them; they were features I didn't need anyway. However, to the point...

Create a folder structure which supports testing of new releases and backup of old releases. This means run, for example, 28 from a folder named "28" (call it what you like). When 29 becomes available, copy what's in the 28 folder to the 29 folder and install release 29 to the 29 folder--you'll still have the 28 release in the 28 folder as your fallback while you're able to test out and play with 29. Rinse and repeat as often as desired; create various versions for testing or whatever. Mostly, it's the add-ons you use that need to be tested anyway. Yes, you'll have backups of just about every previous release once you start doing this, but they don't take up that much space (and you can delete the old stuff if and when you want, or never).
