PortableApps Not working in XP

Hi all,

I've using Ceedo and then someone pointed me out to "PortableAPPS" and from all the reading and screenshots etc... It looks and sounds great! But I've downloaded it and cannot for the life of me install it!
I've tried three different USB Sticks brand and non-brand. On two of them the install completes but the app does not run! With the following Error message:- "The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction. CS:057a: IP:0100 OP:ff ff ff ff ff Choose 'Close' to terminate application."
On the other the installation freezes on 43% for ever!

I've tried copying the patch on top but still nothing.

The only way I can get it to work is to install it on my c:\, but then it defeats the "Portable" purpose....

HELP!

If it works on C, then it should work anywhere

At first I was going to suggest a broken download. But if it works on C, it should work on any of your devices. Copying the whole suite takes a LONG time on some slower devices. Keep in mind you're copying in thousands and thousands of files in hundreds of folders totaling 260mb all at once. It says 15+ minutes and it means it. On some drives, it takes even longer. If you have an older drive or one that's USB 1.1, it will take MUCH longer.

Why not try a fresh drive. Remove all your stuff from it and format it as FAT32. Then grab a copy of the PortableApps Suite - Base Edition. This is just the PortableApps Platform... the integrated menu, icons and backup utility. No extra apps. It's under 1mb and should install quite quickly. Try that out. Then pick and choose the apps you'd like to add form the online directory.

You can even copy in individual apps from the instance of the suite you installed on your C drive. Each app gets its own folder within the PortableApps folder. You can easily move the app and all its data between instances of the suite. They'll also run independently. (just browse to the folder and run FirefoxPortable.exe or whichever launcher it is)

In theory if it works on C then should work anywhere...

OK,

When I said it was taking a long time to install I meant it was at 1.30min installing the lite ver... that's not possible...

I tried installing the base ver like you said now I get the following msg:-

"Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed."

Thanks for the effort John... any other ideas?

Cheers,
V

Something's Broken On Your PC

From looking around for that error, it usually indicates that something is wrong within Windows itself. Apparently, it's sometimes due to installing from a CD drive in the wrong mode or having driver conflicts for your storage devices. But, the more disturbing thing I found is that the error you just quoted could indicate a virus infection. The 'installer' for the suite is just a 7-Zip extractor... pretty simple in the grand scheme of things... and I've never even heard of it causing this error.

I'd start with the usual. Be sure you have no viruses, trojans or spyware on the PC. Then be sure you don't have a misbehaving anti- one of those utilities (I've seen antivirus and antipsyware software cause really odd issues... sometimes a reinstall and full update helps). Then check that hard drive for errors. And, perhaps, run a memory testing utility.

But, unfortunately, it looks like a virus may be your most likely culprit.

Yeah, the installer is just

Yeah, the installer is just uncompressing the files, it shouldn't have any problems.

You can of course uncompress it to C, then copy all that onto your memory stick...

Can't launch / corrupt files?

Could this be a case of a burnt out / worn out usb flash memory device?

They do have a finite life, and the cheaper ones aren't very smart at dealing with bad bits.

I think all Portable App users need to be very aware that their usb flash memory stick WILL wear out, and a damn site faster than anyone elses!

Everything fails

Actually, every storage device fails sooner or later. Hell, I've had a brand new Seagate hard drive fail 30 days after I started using it (that was my first lesson in backing up, back in college, when I lost several original songs I'd composed and had no backups of). Flash drives have a lifetime anywhere from 6 months to a few or more years. Part of it depends on construction (quality of the controller, quality of the flash RAM chips, physical quality of all the connections). Part on the features (all newer drives use wear leveling which greatly improves drive life). And part on usage (running certain apps is more stressful due to increased usage... Firefox with cache enabled, for instance)... but, running apps daily isn't much more stressful than moving files on and off every day (say if you were transporting files back and forth to work). Writes are the thing that uses up drive life the most, which is why all the apps here are designed to minimize writes by default when it doesn't compromise functionality too much.

All that said... ALWAYS BACKUP EVERYTHING. Every drive. Every device. Every file you can't afford to lose.
