When I put in www.duckduckgo.com as my start page,
then ok then restart thunderbird portable it reverts to google.ca
it will not save no matter what i do.
The same thing happened with futureshop.
how do i change this permanently?

What do you mean start page? As a general rule, I recommend not browsing online at all in Thunderbird for security reasons.
