Amarok

Once KDE 4 comes out, if amarok(amarok.kde.org) is ported to win, which it probably will, a portable aption is possible. AND IT WOULD PWN ALL OTHER MUSIC PLAYERS!!!! there. i said it.

we all understand there are

we all understand there are legal isues involved. what people are looking for is a portable media player, divx codecs, mp3, aac, mp4, mov, wav, mpg, avi and any others. w. folders and menus that get saved to a list for the next use. full screen, play forward, back, .25 .5, 1 , 1.5, 2, 3. and to name the folders and to name the videos and genre and whatever else. ive played w. vlc. and well it sucks. itunes is user friendly and easy to use. some fractal stuff and listen equalizers and whatnots to make it sound better. maybe a mp3 and aac thing to enhance the sound in the file. mail play list. look for crap play list. and just drap play list. and the main, moozik, video, podcast, and whatnots. files on portable drive, and another that looks in the computers documents folder for music and vids. something list this would be a BIG HIT. maybe add something like jukebox and games that listen to the sounds and whatnots. any critacism to the idea welcome.

VLC may fail the

VLC may fail the "out-of-the-box idiot benchmark"*, but it's a very useful media player.

*a test of usability where the user knows little more than what the product is for (i.e. not reading any manuals or tutorials or having any prior experience with it).

Perhaps you just do not know how to use the features you want with VLC. Visit www.videolan.org/vlc or, if you have any specific questions about it, start a thread in the VLC support forum.

Hmm, this "out-of-the-box idiot benchmark", that wouldn't be used when people are building furniture and it falls apart, would it? Blum

itunes, wmplayer??

dude, itunes sucks...ever notice how much of the system resources it hogs while you are using it. look into vlc, its much better than you think it is. and as for wmplayer, a microsoft product will be the LAST thing to ever be supported by portableapps

I agree

Mind you, I still use iTunes Blum but only cause I have too many songs to use anything else.
Actually, I sometimes plug my speakers into my iPod. Uses no system resources Biggrin

I don't know

about you, but when I listen to my music, that's what I do... listen to music. I dont need all that "junk" that other players use, I just need to play, pause, next and previous and stop. I dont know how many songs you have, I have a bit more than 1000, I use Billy and I'm able to load all my songs in less than a second. It uses a txt file with the path to my songs and I was able to write a small bat to make the list with the new drive letter each time I plug in my usb drive. (dir /b /s .\*.mp3 > ..\billy\playlist.txt).

Teen2: Are you being sarcastic, dude?

So do I

However, I use it for syncing with my iPod and because I keep my iPod updated with all my songs, iTunes has to be updated as well.
It's too much bother for me to use another app, however if there was a way to use Billy with my iTunes songs, I'd use it.
Any ideas?
Edit: Thanks, good find. Works perfectly with my iTunes library. Biggrin

Idiot Player v0.01

are u guys all stupid? something like musikcube, itunes, wmplayer, bsplayer and whatnot that suppports lots of formats, save playlist, smart list, search and other main things. i have more crap then can organize and need something that will play EVERY format video and music, and is still low recource like musikcube. u guys SHOULD know what i mean. u need 10 different programs to get everything towork and its still not searchable or easy.

Check the attitude

Please check your attitude at the door. Both of your first two posts on this board are very hostile and insulting. This type of behavior isn't accepted around here. If it continues, you'll be banned.

i just done get why people cant understand the concept of something that should have been made in the 1st plase. how hard is it to grasp a concept of a media player that is friendly and not cluttered up by things. and if u thought i was being hostile thats be being friendly.

Keep an eye on Songbird.

It's still in the proof-of-concept stage, but it handles mp3, wma, and aac, among others, and future plans include playing protected file formats (they're still trying to work out the licensing last I heard). It also does avi video. Maybe more video formats, too, but I haven't tested it with any of them yet. Video's still annoying, because it plays in a separate window, but other than that, it feels like a blend of itunes and Firefox (it has a built-in web browser, built on the Firefox code base). Not as low resource as musikcube, but not much worse, either, and still way better than itunes.

Read the top of the thread

It's just not going to happen. It's closed source, so making it portable is illegal, plus it's not designed in a way that makes portability feasible.

NO!!! That's wrong!
What would be illegal is distributing or modifying the program without the permission of the author.

The problems with a portable iTunes are:
1. It is designed to work on one machine only. This is the point of DRM.
2. Anyone who manages to make a launcher that can override DRM will definitely be hearing form Apple's lawyers.

Perhaps a portable iTunes that will only play DRM files on the original computer (i.e. not portably) or not at all may be fine.

One thing you can try...

Write a letter to Apple!

Just about few days ago I was wondering... Why don't apple just put something like iTunes 'lite' version (with basic Quicktime plugin) on iPods so it can be used on any computer that doesn't have one installed? (Since Apple stopped including iTunes CD with newer iPods.) It can even be web-based and I wouldn't mind. (This will be awesome because it can be cross-platform with linux.) I don't really want 'full' version since the space on iPod like nano or shuffle is pretty limited. Still, if not included with the iPod, it'd still be great if it is optional.

If John can't do it, perhaps Apple can.

YamiPod

I use Yamipod to manage my iPods and it works real well. I keep the exe on the iPod and run it off the ipod. It's a single exe.
