Total noob/newbie - can't even get started (jPortable loader can't be found.).

Hi,

I learnt about PortableApps today and am trying to install one particular Java app to USB.

(I m currently using an HP netbook with Windows 8.1, 64 bit)

As advised in http://josm.openstreetmap.de/wiki/USB_Stick

I went to

https://portableapps.com/download

downloaded, and ran the .exe file

A front end for portable apps appeared.

Downloaded from

https://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/java_portable_launcher

to my USB drive, double clicked on the downloaded file.

This opened an installation box, which finished with a "completed" message and the opition to tick "Execute jPortable Launcher".
I left this unticked and clicked on Finish.

I downloaded the java app (JOSM) I wanted to run to the USB drive.

I closed the Portable Apps front end, dismounted my USB drive and removed, then reinserted it.

I doubleclicked "Start.exe"

The little white field in the front end now showed "jPortable launcher (64 bit)" as its only item.

I clicked on this item.

Result:
"jPortable launcher (64 bit) cannot be started. You may wish to reinstal to fix this issue. (ERROR: jPortable (64 bit) [https://portableapps.com/jportable] could not be found."

So I thought that maybe I should install Java through the Portable Apps front end.
I uninstalled the Java launcher, dismounted, removed and reinserted the USB drive, doubleclicked Start.exe, clicked Applications -> Add program -> JavaPortableLauncher64_3.0.paf.exe

Again exit / dismount / remove / reinsert / doubleclick Start.exe / click jLauncher... / same error message.

I read through a support document which gave "Options -> Add a new app" as a way to install new apps, so I clicked on that, and in the window that opened, searched for a jPortable Launcher (this time without 64 bit).

Same result.

ANY help would be greatly appreciated.

Jochen

Missed a Step

You missed a step in the process. You need to install the appropriate version of jPortable (the portable Java runtime), either 32-bit or 64-bit, to match the jPortable launcher. jPortable launcher provides a convenient way of launching Java JAR apps with the jPortable runtime.

Launch the PA.c Platform. Head to Options and select the Advanced tab. Check off "Show Advanced Apps" and then click OK. (This will show the 64-bit version of jPortable since it's not normally used) Now click Apps - Get More Apps - by Category. Then scroll down and tick of jPortable 64-bit within the Utilities section and click Next.

Thanks - that was it. I did

Thanks - that was it.

I did have to uninstal/remove all the Java stuff on my USB drive, but the second attempt went without a hitch.

JOSM is now up and running.

PortableApps.com Platform

The PortableApps.com Platform as downloadable here: https://portableapps.com/download

It has a built in app store that will let you select both jPortable and jPortable Launcher and automatically download and configure them for you. That's what you were saying you were doing in the original post.

I think what you may have done is accidentally download the 32-bit version of one and the 64-bit version of the other. Download both jPortable and the jPortable Launcher and/or both jPortable x64 and jPortable Launcher x64. Regular jPortable Launcher can't use the 64-bit jPortable and vice versa.
