[Fixed] Slow app update check in 12.0 Beta 4+

This thread has been created to address the issue with the updater being very slow to complete checking for outdated apps. This bug was introduced in 12.0 Beta 4 and continues through 12.0 Beta 4.1. It may have been in code to speed up the updater check, ironically.

So far, we've had reports of it occurring in Windows 8 with Defender, unknown Windows with Vipre, and Windows 7 with unknown antivirus.

Check Debug Build #1

Ok, I have a debug build of the PA.c Updater specifically for people experiencing this. It's the same as the current Beta 4.1 updater except that it throws two message box windows. The first will say that the directories have been enumerated. The second that the apps have been looped through. I'd like to know where the long pause is on your system: (1) before either window, (2) between the two windows, or (3) after both windows.

To try this out:
1. Rename your PortableAppsUpdater.exe file within PortableApps\PortableApps.com to PortableAppsUpdaterReal.exe
2. Download [removed - obsolete] and place it in the same directory.
3. Check for outdated apps from within your platform
4. Make note of when the slowness happens as per above
5. Delete this debug updater and rename your real one back to the original name.

Need This

I responded. I don't need the results of the messageboxes. I need this: " I'd like to know where the long pause is on your system: (1) before either window, (2) between the two windows, or (3) after both windows."

Sorry Sir

in between first message and second message is where the delay is. Perhaps the Database reader is the culprit? Sorry I sent the screenshots thought the messages were useful to allow you to see what the messages was ans did not know what you had flagged to show and if it was only to show on error or for each event

Just tried as well...

My delay was between the first and second windows.

As far as antivirus goes this machine is running MSE on Windows 7 x64.

Updater Bug Fix

I've removed the Enumeration speedup code added in Beta 4 and switched back to the Beta 3.2 enumeration. This should play better with antivirus software.

To try this out:
1. Rename your PortableAppsUpdater.exe file within PortableApps\PortableApps.com to PortableAppsUpdaterReal.exe
2. Download [removed - included in current release] and place it in the same directory.
3. Check for outdated apps from within your platform
4. Make sure this is working for you as expected

If it works, you can continue using it until today's update which will include it. If it doesn't, switch back to the current official updater.

Ok, ... now it only take some seconds to check for update.

Downloaded "PortableAppsUpdater . exe" and place it in the same directory.

Much Improved.

Much improved, thank you.
Now only took a few seconds to check and show the latest batch of app updates.

If at first you do not succeed, use more sticky tape.
