Portable Apps Convert

It's only been a couple of days since I loaded up my 1Gb LG USB thingy with Portable Apps. It's brilliant, so many thanks to all concerned.
That's not to say things are 100%. I've a couple of issues with macro loaded Excel files which needed a lot of reformatting, and I can't (yet) get TBird to send any emails, but so far I'm mightily impressed.

I've even added a number of other apps to the Portable Apps menu.
-Skype Portable (just ordinary Skype with a portable launcher)
-Chess (a freestanding little prog from seti)
-FreeShip ( a brilliant 3D draughting programme for amateur yacht designers)

Having read some of the threads, and the problems people are having, here's the griff on my system:-
Toshiba Equium, 40Gb HD (full of MP3), 512 Mb RAM, WinXp fully up-to-date, Windows Defender, Avast AV (NO problems with installers or launching portable apps!).

I'm no computer geek, just a serious user who wants true portability. I think I just may be able to leave my laptop at home in future.

Done all that. Tried every permutation I know including IP addresses.

Opera asked me to do the following:
tracert smtpx.operamail.com
telnet smtpx.operamail.com 25
telnet smtpx operamail.com 587
telnet mailin-o1.mx.aol.com 25

All failed to establish connection with server, yet they say nothing wrong their end??? I can send mail using operamail's web interface, but not Tbird or Outlook.

Now, Outlook works on my home UK WiFi network, so perhaps this infamously IT oppressive country I'm in at the moment has blocked access to this particular server.

I shall try from the UK next week and advise.

If all fail

Then you're blocked from your current location. Most networks blocking outgoing port 25 connections except to their own mail servers, so that's no surprise. Some places may block even more. I'd wager that you're just blocked from outgoing mail connections in this case. You can still connect to the webmail interface because it goes over a different port to a different server (and the oppressive folks can monitor it).

Your home connection is probably using a different SMTP server that can also be monitored.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Bolcked port 25

Hey! Quick answer John.

Looks like we're singing from the same songsheet. I'm going to try a proxy server as soon as I get the details from someone "in the know".

I used Impress in anger today. Walked into the conference room and plugged my usb into the pc. Within seconds I was up and running a 30 slide presentation. Flawless.
