It's the fake email services like Yahoo and Hotmail. Neither of them are real email. They're webmail only. So you need special addons like the Webmail extension to make them work. Yahoo and Hotmail were never intended to be used with a real email client. (Though you can now pay money to make Yahoo into a real email account)
Gmail provides a real SMTP/POP server and has instructions for setting it up right in their help files in a topic called Configuring your email client: Thunderbird 1.5
Real email accounts in TB are all setup the same way... it's just that the servers and ports are different (and are told to you by your provider).
