Well

well it's not that they'll never be portable it is more or less that there will never be any given permission to make it portable. Though you'll never know they may decide to become portable. As Yoda from star wars said the future is in constant motion... or something like that

Um, *Wrong*...

AVG alREADY is portable.
Found it on the net a few wks back, on some Vietnamese website
Tried, it, liked it, and even HAD to use it, when started having prob's with my installed copy of AVG!

Unfortunately, the site seems to spend a considerable amt of its time being DOWN, and therefore unavailable.
Still, try your luck:...

Well... not really. That

Well... not really. That version of AVG is completely and totally illegal. It was made by "mikicun", someone who constantly produces very illegal and semi-portable apps.

I suggest you remove that link, John isn't going to like that very much. It's against forum rules to post links to illegal software. (let alone to farms of illegal software)

Yes, 'really'...

@ vamp1r

"That version of AVG is completely and totally illegal"

Mmmm, perhaps. But if so, only in the sense that the proggy was modified from its original form to make it portable.
It's still a free program in its original form, and it IS "portable", which is what the person was looking for.

"semi-portable apps."
----------------------
Nothing "semi" about it, in my use of it so far...

I would, but I can't edit it to do so, dig?... John is welcome to do so if he wishes.

I'm not clear that THAT proggy is illegal, although I *did* notice some proggies on there which are commercial, non-free apps, and therefore, THEY are illegal.

Truth is, I would've posted the link JUST to that proggy, but for some reason, that URL pasted directly into yer browser doesn't work. Only getting to that mainpage and clicking from there will do it, so I took a chance...

It's all illegal

It is illegal to modify or in any way repackage software without the express consent of the copyright holder. Open source specifically gives you this right in its license. Freeware ususally does not (99.9% of the time anyway). Price does NOT matter. License and legality do.

Heck, it's actually illegal to redistribute a free (as in no cost) piece of software like AVG unless they specifically give you that right (which I believe AVG does in their license.

And, just in case you're curious, AVG License Section 3:
"3. Use Restrictions. You must not use the program in any manner somehow jeopardizing or violating the manufacturers' copyrights. Particularly, it is prohibited to make copies thereof (with the exception of making copies to be used as a backup). In addition, you must not reproduce the program, change it, modify it, decompile it, transfer it from a mechanical code, reanalyze it or create any deduced works therefrom by processing. All explicitly non-granted rights are reserved..."

His apps are very messy and leave registration entries laying around. I tested one out a while ago (forget which) and it's just no good from legality to functionality.

Okey-day...

Okay, fair enuff.
FWIW, tho', I jumped into the fray here simply to point out that there IS a portable version of it that's been done, as contrasted to the claim that it "will never be portable".
I only threw the link in 'cuz I figured someone would complain if I *didn't*.....

Firstly
  1. Include a link with requests
  2. Include a description with requests
  3. Please search the forums. This has been mentioned before

In short, it can not be done because it is a proprietary, closed-source application. We can only make open-source and some freeware apps portable.
