Laptop...

Any suggestions for a nice high-end laptop? I'm looking to spend more than most, but I don't want to pay a boatload of money for an okay or just good laptop. I want a powerful machine. It must have very little trouble running Linux (though I do not plan to run Linux alone on it). I've heard that Dell uses cheap parts. Dunno if it's true. Oh, and I hate Macs. They are worthless pieces of crap except for a few specific things that they can supposedly (I don't mean this sarcastically; I just don't know if it's true or not) do better. I will not have the money in time for the price slashes that happen around this time of year Sad , so don't point me at anything specific unless you know the price won't change in a month. Also, I do not mind something heavy.

I've been considering this so far:

One way to shop for a laptop would be to call Dell and talk with one of their salesmen and have them build you a laptop the way you want it. Then they can email you the specs. and you can shop for other comparable units.
Maybe go to their website and take a look of their laptops and build one yourself. It's very easy. This would be one way before you talk to anyone. Get an idea of what they will cost. For a high end your probably in the $2-3,000 range and if money is no object you can get them gold plated:)
Things to consider:
How much Ram? With Vista a minimum of 1GB-2G and if a gamer 4GB.
Dell's high end laptops are just that, high end and expensive. You pay for what you get.

I use a Sony Vaio laptop certainly not high end but with 1GB of ram it does the job, but I'm not a gamer.

Tell the salesman your minimums and what you plan to use your laptop for. The more info you give them the better suited laptop you will get.

I use mine for mp3, internet, Office Suite Apps and photos.
Nothing too complicated. 80GB harddrive. If your into DVD movies etc you'll want as big a harddrive as you can afford and the same for the Ram.

Good hunting. You can also Google high end laptop reviews

Many quality choices

What are your needs? Basically, will you be playing games or not?

I highly recommend:
-The ABS Mayhem laptop line. Customizable at that site or preconfigured from Newegg.
-The Acer Ferrari laptop line. Also at Newegg.
-The Asus Lamborghini line. And from Newegg.

If you'd like something less flashy, I personally think the crème de la crème is the ThinkPad variety of notebooks. ThinkPads have excellent Linux support as well.

Vaio's are of excellent quality, but exorbitant price - more so than just about any other, IMO.

For durability, take a look at the Twinhead Durabooks, which are worth a look for their good cost to feature ratio, though I've read some negative reviews here and there. Then there's the Panasonic Toughbook line that, like the Vaio series from Sony, tends to have a very attractive feature set and terrific quality, but whacky pricing.

For Linux compatibility, see Linux On Laptops.

Lastly, here's a custom notebook builder who offers Linux preinstalled: LinuxCertified.com

Well

I just got an ASUS A6JC with built-in Webcam, Microphone, Bluetooth, Wifi and a DVD/CD-R.
Oh, and you can play CDs without booting.
It's nice Smile
