WinZip supports a format where the entire zip archive is broken into multiple files. It is necessary, for example, on my iPod which can't tolerate a single file > 4 gigabytes.
When I try to open this in 7-Zip it does nothing.

Check with 7-Zip.
And I doubt it's supported. Splitting ZIP files is non-standard and only supported by a couple of proprietary products (and it doesn't work between products).
