new PC- now USB drive doesn't mount correctly

I got a new Dell laptop (XP SP2) at work. When I plug in my Verbatim USB drive it doesn't mount correctly. It has an "!" in Device Manager and does not show in My Computer. If I disable/enable the drive in Device Manager it properly mounts and gives me the what do want to do popup with PAM as the default choice. Any ideas on what's causing this and how to fix? The drive worked fine in the old PC and works fine on my home PCs.

U3?

Since it's Verbatim... any chance the U3 platform is on it? U3 has compatibility issues with certain systems and software. If it's not U3, do other removable drives work on this new laptop? And does it say anything in your system error log?

It was a U3

but I deleted the U3 stuff from it awhile ago using the utility from the U3 webiste. I did try one other USB drive in it at home which worked fine. I don't see anything in the event viewer.

Hmmm

I know some U3 drives the uninstaller doesn't work quite right and can leave the drive a bit iffy. Did you run the U3 uninstaller from Verbatim? Or from U3? (there are several different ones) Could you try running the uninstaller again and then reformatting the drive? Maybe that would help.

It was the U3 uninstaller

I haven't been able to find an uninstaller on Verbatim's web site. Their "support" area is pretty lame. I'll try uninstalling/reformatting agin aand see what happens.

didn't work :(

I ran the uninstaller, formatted as FAT then as FAT32 and then repeated the process, unplugging and replugging between steps. Finally restored all the files back to the drive and went to work. Plugged in my drive and the same thing happened.

I've got another U3 drive (Kingston I think) that I'm not using yet. Guess I'll have to give that one a try.

Try plugging it into a

Try plugging it into a computer which hasn't seen the drive before after a fresh FAT32 format. Maybe your laptop is still recognizing the drive and won't mount it automatically because it was told not to the first time. ..just an idea

some follwoup

I removed the U3 crap from my Kingston 1G, installed all my portable apps and plugged it into the laptop. Same thing happened- an error in Device Manager. Disabling and re-enabling the drive there allows it to work. (One positive is that I now figured out a shortcut to device manager that I put on my desktop which minimizes the pain).

Yesterday I helped a friend with some computer problems and took my Kingston drive along in case I needed to de-crapify the PC (several year old Dell with XP SP2). When I plugged it in, it recognized it as a Kingston U3 drive but then wanted some drivers. I assume the only drivers were on the drive and were blasted off when I cleaned the U3 stuff off. Letting XP search for drivers didn't help.

So 2 different ex-U3 drives don't mount correctly on my new work laptop but work on my home PC and older Dell laptop. One of those, at least, won't work on another PC. I think I'm gonna keeps my eyes open for a non-U3.

Drivers

Storing drivers on the drive would not help. The computer is telling you that it cannot recognize the drive you have inserted. I suspect it has somehow gotten corrupted.
