Pixel image editor

I made portable version of Pixel image editor and posted URL to this forum so people can actually test it (it's not available anywhere else yet).

I got URL deleted with message I'm self promoting my product because it's not open source. Admin gotta be kidding, self promoting something in this forum Biggrin

Since he knows what people want and removed URL to download, I deleted Pixel portable... how a nice day.

PS: And I hope everything around you is opensource, you know trees, flowers, air, everything. Opensource is nice if there are those geeks to work on it, I'm not one of them, I'll rather spend my free time having real life instead of sitting in front of computer.

Actually

I didn't make the rules, I only enforce them.
Read the guidelines, it's right under the first header.
No Self-Promotional Posting - Posting about your own software or websites in an online forum is a form of spamming and is not permitted here. If you make a self-promotional post, it will be editted and your account may be disabled. The exception is if someone asks a question directly related to your product. In addition, if you are releasing a Free, portable, open source product (OSI-approved license) that is not a fork of an app hosted here, you may make a post when you do a release. The code for this product must be available from the page you link to in your post and your product must properly attribute contributors (so, if you're basing a launcher on a PortableApps.com launcher, for instance, you must credit this on your product page similar to the way the Acknowledgements on this site are posted).

Exception

You mentioned exception, and that is the case Smile

I've found this:
https://portableapps.com/node/3205

So I decided to provide Pixel image editor as portable app. Never mind.

Okay for third time trying to post

I've tried posting this three times and messed up each time. Anyhow

I've discovered that you need three programs to make icons.

1. Onscreen Caliper (portable freeware I think)
2. Icon Sushi (after you've edited the picture, your export it into the .ico format)
3. Either Paint (on a host computer) or the Gimp

Say I got permission to post a packaged download of all this stuff in one file for download, then I hosted it through esnips.com so people could download it.

Could I put a forum post that I put this stuff together and it was available for download. Would having the Gimp installer in the packet make it a fork of an app? Would removing it make it a legal forum topic?
Would linking the download site by coding the >click here

Nope

Must be open-source at the moment. Even if you have permission to redistribute freeware, you can't post it here at the moment. However, the rules are likely to change soon when John gets the freeware server up.

I personally use Inkscape for the SVGs, which I export at several different sizes. I then use GIMP to export each of those images at several bpps then combine all of them into one with CombineIcons (search for it).

So if its open source I could post it here, i.e If I had the source code to give away?

Man kanzelsberger... :/

What`s the problem?

If it`s free in price why it shouldn`t be free in freedom (open source)? It`s not only about source, it`s about freedom to do whatever you want. I like GPL licenses, them save me a lot time reading just another stupid agreement. If someone don`t trust you because he don`t know you, he can compile from source. This would improve your level of trust.

You don`t force people to pay for your software and you want to get some money thought. But as far I can tell you, people will rather pay to open source then to proprietary. Open source and accept donations would be fine enugh.

Nvm.

To work arround this... Don`t post your hole portable program here. Just post a launcher to start your programm in portable mode and include the source. That`s the way to get familiar with the forum rules. People need to download the closed source still from your page and all can be happy.

I could care less if software is open source or free

But I don't make the rules here...and the rule (currently) is Open Source software only.
