not having success installing apps

Hi I am very new to portable apps but see the benefits in them. My first question is this, my icon in the file address line is not of a drive or anything similar in fact it looks like a small square with a red and green dot in it, what is it please? It took me 4 installs to get the basic program to open but i cant get thunderbird to start or load as i only get a dos window for a few seconds.
I have downloaded the 1.5.0.8 version and double clicked and i get is the dos window?
The icon next to thunderbird portable .exe is just a square not the thunderbird one, what is wrong any help is appreciated
My Drive is formatted as FAT32 and is 4gb and it is brand new, i have tried FAT as well but things dont start then either.

Corrupted

Anytime you see a "messed up" icon on a Windows EXE and it tries to bring up a DOS Window when you run it, that EXE is corrupted. You'll need to re-download and reinstall. Try installing it to a local directory on your hard drive first to ensure all is working correctly and then copy it to your drive. If it works on your PC but not on your drive, then there is something wrong with your drive itself. Since you already reformatted, it may be a hardware issue.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Format

Sorry I forgot to ask whether to format in FAT or FaT32 does it make a diference and does the size of the drive make any difference to performance. thanks
