Spam

Hey John,

Ryan and I were talking. I asked him if there was a way to at that verify thingy to the forums every time a new post is made. I know be a pain, but I would cut down on the spam.

Ryan said that drupal offers something like that.

Postings?

Just on registrations?

Is there anything for individual postings?

No

I don't think so.
Anyway, if we had to do that on every post, I think I'd die. Wink

No Captcha

Captchas are a bit evil as they exclude visitors with sight impairments, which isn't very nice at all.

Dealing with spam is a bit like whack-a-mole sometimes. The spammers are using multiple open proxies and hacked machines around the world. One of the recent runs used a different IP for each post.

I've implemented a series of measures that should cut down on the issue, though. I won't discuss them too much in public as that may assist the spammers in getting around them. Sadly, this has been more of a time-sink than it should be. But, when you have a site with 500,000 page views a day it becomes a very tempting target for spammers.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Just a thought.

It was just a thought. I'm glad you have instituted some other measures.

I'm fairly sure

That the Drupal module also does audio captchas.

phpBB (and most sites with CAPTCHAs) have the option to contact an administrator if the image can't be read.

verify each post is just insane. I think the dealth penalty for all spammers is a much more suitable punishment.

How about...

John,

Can you add a suggestion on the guidelines to not post the full emails because of spam? Use the (at) instead of @, etc.

Just a thought.
