Is there a list to post and/or check which drives do not work with PASuite (PortableApps Suite) ?
I just purchased 10 (ten) 4gb SanDisk Cruzer Minis and PASuite won't load and I'm stuck with garbage USB drives.
I purchased them because the price was good and the fact that I've had excellent results with the Cruzer Micro.
Would think a MySQL database for good/bad drives could be very useful and save a lot of headaches.

I just bought two TigerDirect "SpeedDrive" models, and while they work OK, they seem godawfully s-l-o-o-w-w-w, thus negating their very names.
I can't test that observation, tho', cuz I don't have any flashdrive benchmarking toolz.
Does anyone know where I can find such an app?...

Here's my addition to the list.
Any flash drive that you get from eBay and an unbelievable price.
Any flash drive that you get from eBay shipped from China or Russia.
Any flash drive that has a price that is "too good to be true".

This software does not really reports any real life values for the USB drive speeed. It´s mostly a simple transfer rate test without any influence from e.g. the access time.
If you want to have some more realistic values try "h2benchw" from this site:
http://www.heise.de/ct/ftp/ctsi.shtml
It´s a tool from the german magazin c´t. It does not only test the transfer rate of the drive it also contains some application profiles where e.g. the access patterns from swapping, installing, photoshop and word are simluated.
To measure everything execute "h2benchw.exe -a -tt -w -english"
This will start the read tests and save the results to an output file (txt and ps).
With a good USB stick I measured a application index of 14 MB/s where the transfer speed was at about 17 MB/s (access time 0.5ms).
A worse one (access time ~30ms) gives transfer rates of also around 15 MB/s but only a application index of 2MB/s!!!!
This is not measureable by all these simple transfer rate test tools!
Hey Froschie!
What would make the h2benchw program useful here if it doesn't measure write performance? I would think that write speed could be where some of these flash drives differ greatly...
...or am I missing something?
Of course it would be important to measure the write performance. But you can only measure it if you delete the existing partition before that!
Then you can use the "-!" option to measure also the write performance.
And by the way... how often do you write to your stick?
But even without the write performance measurement the results are more worth than the simple read measurements by HD Tach as there is no influence of latency.
Any PNY Attache drives. Ohh and good luck on getting to their support.
since 15th of Jan.
Whats wrong?
It WAS very cheap,though.

the Apacer 4G amber-colored stick. I had two. both died just after I developed enough confidence to put important stuff on them.
FORTUNATELY I had a backup, and FORTUNATELY, I don't even know if they make them anymore. They might have pulled them off the market because they were so bad.

Sunworks:
I am surprised that you are having problems with the Sandisk Cruzer. I am very happy with my 512 MB Micro and 2 GB Mini. I have to admit that I am not using the PASuite. I just use PStart with a bunch of individual poratble apps. Is the PASuite the only application that does not load?
Thanx. Tried it. Shows my 1 GB SanDisk Cruzer relatively *blazes* by at an avg of 16.8 M/sec, while my 4 GB "SpeedDisk" crawls by at 0.9 M/sec.
I'm thinking of seeing about having TigerDirect send me a replacement...
What do y'all guys think? Should a USB 2.0 drive be crawling by a this speed, or is it likely a bad unit?...

Memorex Mega TravelDrive
I bought one, it was DOA.
Returned it for an exchange, it died in 24 hours.
Returned it again, it died in a week.

Hey, at this rate, a mere two more returns of it and you can have it last for a WHOLE YEAR!...

Your SanDisks *should* work provided that your correctly remove the U3 Software. I've been running with SanDisk Minis for a while now, all came with U3, which I removed. They all work great, and I have no complaints.
2.
I have the 1 Gig and it works well.

How well do the small 1" HD drives hold up? I have a Memorex 4gb Mega Travel Drive and interested in the approximate life. Thank you.
did you read my post above?

I did see your post but had hoped someone else had some other experience. My Mega Travel Drive has been running now for over four months with no hiccups at all.
I had the same drive for a while. I found that the time it took fro the drive to spin up caused some delays in PFF. Plus, I dropped it once, and the @#% thing jammed. Luckily I was able to tap it on the tabletop and get it unstuck, but I went back to flash drives after that. Too risky!
Hope this is useful to you.

Tappet, thanks for your experience. I will probably use my until it dies and then go back to flash drives as well.
I had the same experience. Each one of several attempts hung up at 25% for a while and then froze for good at 51% - the exact same point every time. I gave up after a while.
Yo bought 10??? I hope you did not buy them on ebay!
