Windows XP formatted NTFS and Flash drive formatted FAT32

I recently got a OCZ 4GB Rally 02. I was replacing an old 1GB drive that was starting to corrupt a lot of files.

I loaded up the new 4GB drive and started using portable apps. However for no good reason files were becoming corrupted. I always do a proper unmount so this made no sense.

So today I reloaded the drive from scratch, formatted FAT32. Periodically throughout the day I would do a chkdsk on the drive. The drive had corrupted files even though I did not eject/unmount the drive. Even more bothering was that corrupted files were in apps that I had not even used today.

So the only thing that make sense to me is that I had installed the apps from my C:\ which is NTFS. I know Windows SHOULD manage the conversion... but is it really doing such when the unpacking is being done with 7-Zip?

My OS is clean, Norton is up to date, and I have Windows Defender running also.

I am thinking that the 1GB drive was fine and the corrupted files were the result of my Windows OS being on NTFS and the flash drive being FAT32.

Any thoughts on this?

Try this.. Unpack and set up

Try this.. Unpack and set up a folder on your HD the same as if it was on your USB drive. Do a test on that folder to verify that the files are good, then transfer to your USB drive then test again. If the files are bad, then re-install the USB drivers.

Your problem is ether driver or wiring within the USB port, try another port as will. I move files around on NTFS, FAT and EXT3 all the time without any problems.

I haven't used 7zip so I don't know it. I've had problems with winzip corrupting files, I use RAR myself. Unpacking to a folder that you know is good will clear the possibility of a bad zip.

Did you know that the entire operating system use to fit on a 5 1/4" floppy disk!

All the apps on this site

All the apps on this site are distributed as sfx 7z files, so you prob have used 7z even if you didn't notice!

I've never had such a problem - this "conversion" is done by a low level windows part, and would be surprised if it is this that is messing things up...

DISREGARD

Turns out after extensive testing I found that I had a bad / underpowered USB hub.

I guess the OCZ drives need a little more juice than I thought.

Sorry for any confusion. I kept thinking software/OS instead of hardware...

How did you test USB port?

How did you test your USB port? I think I might have a similar issue...chkdsk shows file system corruption for no apparent reason. I changed flash drives, same symptoms. I move this flash drive among three computers, and I suspect maybe my laptop is the culprit.

Thanks,

JLS

Not sure if this is the same

Not sure if this is the same problem, but I've a Sandisk Cruzer 512MB that I've been using for 2+ years now w/o a hitch. I just bought a SimpleTech 2GB drive and I'm experiencing problems.

Simpletech is formatted as FAT32 (I've also tried FAT) and have done full formats on the drive. Same problem. I'm getting this error on fresh install (right on the drive) as well as install on desktop when copy/paste into drive.

"Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed"

In other cases, when I did a fresh format and then install, say PortableVLC, I noticed while VLC is installing, and I'm in another folder (totally unrelated to VLC, a vlc.dll suddenly appears on the folder) and when I tried to delete the file, I can't (sorry, don't remember the error message).

ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory

I am trying to load several flash drives with PortableApps suite as graduation gifts. I need to load 16 drives. I have been working on several different computers. I continue to get the following message; "Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed" I have tried several of the suggestions listed above with no success. Of the 16 drives 6 have loaded successfully.

Any new ideas? Anything would be helpful!

Some ideas from Google

http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic17341.html

try partitioning it and formatting it using disk administrator, which you will find if you select computer management from administrative tools.

low level formatting: http://www.computing.net/hardware/wwwboard/forum/33941.html

HP formatting program: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/serveroptions/us/download/20306....
