SUMo Updates, Unofficial Apps, .NET Apps

Mod Note: This conversation was split off from the Outdated Apps post to preserve it. - JTH

Hello,

I scaned my PortableApps folder with SUMo (the software Update monitor) and it found many updates available.
Of cause I updated my portable apps via the PortableApps Platform before scanning.

I removed all "unofficial" apps from the list and also all apps that are known as outdated.
Here is the list of Updates that SUMo reports:

  • CrystalDiskInfo (6.3.2.2015)
  • Free Download Manager (3.9.1542.0)
  • Google Chrome (64 bits) (45.0.2421.0)
  • Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition (38.0.1.0)
    Path: D:\PortableApps\PortableApps\PrivateBrowsingByPortableApps\Data\FirefoxPortable.exe
  • USB Disk Ejector (1.3.0.3)
    Path: D:\PortableApps\PortableApps\PortableApps.com\App\Bin\eject.exe
  • Windows Security Center integration (2.3.39.2)
    Path: D:\PortableApps\PortableApps\SpybotPortable\App\Spybot\Updates\Extracts\SDWSCSvc.exe
  • WinMerge Portable (2.14.0.0)
  • Wise Disk Cleaner (8.5.1.602)
  • Wise Registry Cleaner (8.5.2.549)

I hope this information is useful for you!

Greetings

OLLI

Thanks, SUMo bugs and noise

Thanks for the idea and effort. Unfortunately, these types of SUMo reports are mostly noise, which is one reason I don't use SUMo. The associated DUMo is basically dangerous as it encourages you to update to a version of a driver that may not be appropriate for your system, causing instability (seen it happen). For example:

Free Download Manager: Duplicate info (noise) see above
Google Chrome 64-bit: Wrong, stable is at 43.x, SUMo is broken and listing the Dev version. This happens often.
Firefox: Wrong, Firefox is at 38.0.5 as released on our site/updater
USB Disk Ejector: Internal platform component, not updated independently by the PA.c Platform, and not until tested (functionality > version number)
WSC: You need to run Spybot's internal updater, Spybot itself is up to date, a component within it is not
WinMerge: Correct version number, incorrect analysis as we released WinMerge Portable 2.14 years ago. Another SUMo bug.
Wise Disk Cleaner: Duplicate info (noise) see above

CrystalDiskInfo and Wise Registry Cleaner were out of date.

For future posts, please manually verify each listing at the publisher's site first and ensure what local version you're running for when SUMo incorrectly flags things as out of date that aren't (which happens often). Without manually verifying, it winds up being more work for me to do which defeats much of the purpose of this reporting tool. Remember, SUMo is dumb and basically just reports if there is a later version of a given file anywhere in the world. That's unhelpful, at least directly, when we're only looking for actual releases posted on a publisher's site. It can help in terms of what to research, as I did here.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Hello John,

Hello John,

interesting to know that DUMo is dangerous and SUMo is not very trustable (too much noise).
In future I will check at the developers page before I post a new release here.

On my old PC I used the "Software Informer" (SI) to keep my system (the installed apps) up to date.
But the database of SI is updated by user reports, so it is not always up to date.
And also SI shows updates that I have already installed.

I have a new PC now and I want to install as less applications as possible.
So I try to use as many applications as portable applications as possible!

In the past (on my old PC) I used PortableApps not regularly.
On my new PC I always use PortableApps and I have important applications like Skype, Firefox and others only on PortableApps.
You and your team did a great job!

Unfortunately many applications are not available as PortableApps or are not official builds (that are not updated by the PortableApps Platform).
I want to encourage you to build more apps as official portable apps.

Here some examples what is missing:

  • Lazarus (available only as unofficial build)
  • all tools from Piriform (CCleaner, Recuva, Speccy and Defraggler)
  • MP3Tag (available only as unofficial build)
  • Screenshot Captor (available only as unofficial build)
  • TeamSpeak
  • Don't Sleep
  • KeePass
  • MyPhoneExplorer
  • Privazer
  • FreeFileSync (I know about the problem)
  • WSCC

It would be very useful to see here a list of applications, that are not available as official builds.
In this list you should write all applications and their status:

  • .NET apps (like KeePass)
  • apps, where you don't have the permission to publish it (like MP3Tag or ToDoList) and their status (like you wait for a reply of the publisher)
  • apps with errors/problems (like FreeFileSync )
  • apps that are only available as unofficial builds (https://portableapps.com/development/test)

With such a list users can see the status of applications, that are not available as official PortableApps apps.
And they see if there is an unofficial build available.

About .NET apps:
I really would love to see also .NET apps published as official PortableApps apps.
If a user does not have the .NET framework installed, then an error message should be shown.
At the download also such a message should be shown.
I have Win7 and .NET is installed and I really would love to see KeePass.

It would be such a wonderful world, when all my favorite apps are available as official PortableApps apps.
So when I re-install Windows or get a new PC, I just need to start the PortableApps Platform and I have all my favorite tools with all my settings.
A real benefit!

Greetings

OLLI

Moved Thread, Unofficial, .NET

I've moved this thread out of Outdated Apps to continue it.

Tracking unofficial builds isn't planned at present due to a lack of resources and interest. It's basically up to users to monitor. Keeping up with official apps is a big enough drain on my personal time.

.NET apps will come at some point now that XP is dying and others are growing. Plus, support in the platform is nearly complete, which will allow it to be automated at the platform level.

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!

Further

Olli, further to what JTH says a number of the apps you mention are natively portable and will happily update themselves.

I am happy to use Piriform, KeePass and FFS apps in their native portable formats and for the ones I use very often on one system I keep both. I think you may be losing some of the philosophy which is to make apps portable, surely PA format is secondary?
