PasswordSafePortable (testers needed)

PasswordSafe, now in a PortableApps format. Need testers.

Grab it here: http://www.jeffstoner.com/index.php?categoryid=11

Notes:
I opted to use the 2.16 version of PasswordSafe due to some of the problems I've heard about in the 3.x branch.

Please, please, please use *copies* of existing password databases. Do not test with your regular password database(s). Since PasswordSafe stores the location of databases in the registry, you should move/rename your existing databases so it does not touch them.

Nice

Ill check it out...
EDIT
I had to download and copy 3 dll files to the /app dir before I could run the program (MFC71.dll, MSVCR71.dll, MSVCP71.dll)
Is this normal?

depends on your platform

From the PasswordSafe readme:

Note: Versions 2.15 and later require newer versions of Microsoft's runtime
libraries. If PasswordSafe complains about a "Missing DLL", you can get the
DLL from http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net/redist.zip - just unzip it and
place in in C:\Windows\system32.

I'll see about redistributing the DLLs with PasswordSafe so others won't hit this. Thanks for pointing it out.

I'll also use 2.16, the last release of the 2.x branch.

repackaged

Ok. I rebuilt the launcher (not necessary but, what the heck.) I updated PasswordSafe to 2.16 and included the Microsoft DLLs. All compressed with UPX. The new zip file weighs in at just over 1 meg in size, expanded it's 1.45 megs on disk.

Simeon, if you could test the new version and make sure to rename/move the original DLLs you downloaded before (to make sure pwsafe.exe is picking up the included DLLs correctly) and let me know the results. Thanks.

Version 2 works well

Does anyone know how I get the Launcher to erase this key after running PWSafePortable:

HKU\S-1-5-21-1015306542-2518923940-3689162153-1170\Software\Counterpane Systems

i just use truecrypt and encrypt everything in a nice neat package....very tough and it can be configured to be put on a thumb drive...but I have downloaded it and played with it and it looks simple enough for anyone to use.....

somewhat corrected

I modified the registry key saved/restored by the launcher and rebuilt it. That "S-1-5-21-blahblah" key you referenced is specific to your individual login - the number is globally unique so it's impossible to predict. However, it is tied to the HKCU hive, so changes made there will be (should be) reflected in HKU.

Please test this version (0.4.0.0) and see how well it works for you.

While testing, I came across an interesting Registry issue, which I'll post about in another thread.

before you buzz off, could you help me on this one:
How do I get a Launcher to remove this key after the programm being run:

HKU\S-1-5-21-1015306542-2518923940-3689162153-1170\Software\Counterpane Systems

Easy

HKU\S-1-5-21-1015306542-2518923940-3689162153-1170 is the same as HKCU
Therefore:
HKCU\Software\Counterpane Systems
Open up NSIS help and skip to the registry section.
It's should be DeleteRegKey.

I think

Version 3 could be called "final".
I tested it and it worked well.

Thanks

I'm going to do a little more testing here. I still need to build it into a .paf.exe.

Also, if someone wants to have the honor of replacing my really, really horrible splash screen, I'd appreciate it. My graphic skills are limited to MS Paint. Smile
