Why is there a default browser option when obviously it has no effect?
Also has any consideration been made as to how downloading updates may effect stability of the program?

The default button is part of Firefox which is unmodified... so it's still there. It can't be removed without messing with source code... and then we couldn't call it Firefox anymore.
You can let auto-updates in the Mozilla apps work as usual. It'll take a bit longer (as long as 5 minutes depending on your drive) but they're designed to update.

I don't really understand why it is so necessary to have the 'default browser' button when really it serves no function.
I'd really like to be able to set Portable FF to at least intergrate with Portable TB so that when I click on links in emails TB is opened instead of IE.
Is this possible now?
As I just clearly stated, it cannot be removed without altering Firefox's source code. And, if we do that, Firefox Portable can not be called Firefox anymore. This is due to Mozilla's licensing. I can't explain this any more clearly.
FFP to TBP links will be coming at a later point. A customer extension is being worked on.
