New to PortableApps

Hello,

I just signed up here. I'm new to the PortableApps suite, having downloaded it to a new 1 GB flash drive just a couple of days ago. So far, I'm very impressed.

I wanted to say THANK YOU to the team of folks who created PortableApps. I'm amazed that I can now carry all my fave programs and settings around with me. I've used Firefox and Thunderbird and OpenOffice, and I love them, but I've also discovered some new programs that are fast becoming favorites, such as Sunbird and Audacity. My next step will be to try out some of the beta applications here.

I have two home computers, one of them runs Ubuntu Linux 6.06 exclusively, and the other runs Windows XP. I use XP at work and really like the fact that I can now take my favorite programs with me to work and back. I used to e-mail stuff to myself all the time, but not anymore.

My flash drive is a PQI Cool Drive. I may get another flash drive so I can download PortableApps to give as a gift to my brother, who travels around a lot.

Again, thanks to Mr. Haller and all those who are working hard to make PortableApps so great!

No Kidding

the portable apps suite is awesome!!! and if you use truecrypt to encrypt your drive you have a complete system.

Just to mention it

for the newbies:
Truecrypt only works if its installed on the host computer.
So if it isn't installed, you need admin rights to install it.

Not true. There's "traveler mode" which can run from the external drive, but it requires admin rights to mount a virtual drive.

TrueCrypt

ok let me clarify on truecrypt

yes you can install it onto the pc and you can also use traveler mode which will put true crypt onto the thumb drive. however, to run truecrypt in traveler mode you must have access to the admin account or the admin password to run it. If you don't you are hosed and you won't be able to run it. If you use a school or public library then I would recommend using password keeper to keep all of your private stuff private. but if you are like me and only use your thumb drive on your own laptop or personal computer then you shouldn't have any problems...

I would recommend that you read the tutorial before you do anything with truecrypt and set aside a fair amount of time since it does take about 3hrs to format a 6GB thumb drive using AES. but other than that truecrypt is a great program to keep your stuff from prying eyeballs.

Okay...I downloaded

Okay...I downloaded TrueCrypt last night, but I haven't installed anything yet. I plan to read the documentation before I do anything else. This program looks more complex than I thought it would be, so I want to make sure I know what I am doing before going any further.

Thanks!

3 hours? WOW

It took no more than 30 min. to format 10gb.
Also, to all new users, keep a backup of your important stuff somewhere else (home PC for example), until you completely understand TrueCrypt. I was reading in their forums people who lost all their information because their TC volume got corrupted and they had not backed up their headers, or they forgot their passwords and where not able to access their stuff.

3hrs

ok that's formatting a 6GB thumb drive on usb 1.1 not 2.0 I am sure it's faster on 2.0 but I just wanted to give heads up that it can take some time.
