It sure would be nice to have a portable spell-check tool(standalone)that I can use for my desktop software. I am a Writer and even though my authoring software has a spell-check tool built in, it must be 'built upon' as you use it, so it does not come with a standard, or even a small, dictionary. My employer does not allow anyone to install applications to our desktop, so this utility would help me very much! I could go out to the internet, but what a hassle. Even doing that is logged by our Administrators.
just a thought and dream......
Don't know if it's portable (or even how to use it), but I know that it's good, as it is used in my Linux apps.

Aspell gas no GUI, its only cmd.
I googled for a GUI but all the links I found were 2-3 years old and dead...

Surely that's a good thing? I use it to spell check lyrics tags in mp3s - wouldn't be bothered to do that with a GUI...
tinySpell would be a good candidate to consider also.
