ClamWin leaves files

I discovered today that ClamWin Portable leaves some files behind:
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\[username]\Lokale Einstellungen\Temp\nsr41.tmp\newadvsplash.dll
and
C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\[username]\Lokale Einstellungen\Temp\ClamWin1.txt
The Clamwin1.txt says:

System Locale: ('de_CH', 'cp1252')
Default Encoding: cp1252
command line path:
Cleanup for process 000004a8

Any plans/hints/ideas???

Splash Screen

I find that a few portable apps leave:

...\Temp\nsr41.tmp\newadvsplash.dll
behind.

I think newadvsplash.dll has something to do with the fancy (i.e. stupid) fading splash screen. Personally I could do without it if it meant leaving less behind. I wish John would get rid of it from all the apps and have a simple splash screen.

Hmmm

It shouldn't do that and hadn't in my last testing. You using the ClamWinPortable.ini or setting it to wait for close?

It's set to wait for the splash to finish even if it's done processing (it runs in parallel so the splash doesn't affect load times).

And Tim, I don't think a 200 millisecond fade in is really that big a deal... and certainly not worth any attitude over. Besides, it's just a setting with the same NSIS component, so the fact that it fades has zero to do with files left behind.

Almost looks like NSIS is

Almost looks like NSIS is getting confused, maybe by the "foreign" language? Did some googling and looking at the NSIS wiki but nothing jumped out at me. I don't think it is anything the installer itself is actually doing, just NSIS....

But this is pure speculation. Smile

Sorry John

John, I'm so sorry if you misundersood me.

I have not problem with the wait. I could care less if it takes twice as long.

I'm just assuming (correct me if I am wrong) that the dll in question is used for the fade effect. I was thinking if we could forego the fade effect and lose the dll it might solve the problem. I run ClamWinP several times a day (to check for updates) and at the end of the day I have several directories with the copies of the dll in them to delete. I used to think that it was all the apps that did this. It now seems to me that it might only be ClamWinP. I just experimented with FFP and TBP, they both remove the directories and files when they close.

The reason I guess it seemed like I was having attitude is that it has become part of my daily routine to "Clean Up after PortableApps". I always thought of this as a bug in the "leave no trace behind" philosophy, but since I don't really care if anyone "knows I was here" I didn't care and never said anything.

Bug

It is a bug in ClamWin Portable. Looks like the launcher was closing before the splash DLL was done processing. I added a wait to the most recent launcher to fix this. It's not normal behavior. I wish you'd posted a bug report about it in the past.

It's happened with other apps in the past (including FF and TB), but those bugs were fixed quite some time ago (over a year). NSIS has to use a plugin to display any splash screen as support is not built into the base scripting environment. I'd adjusted the splashes to use a fade in and no fade out for performance a while ago (the fade out can cause the portable app to redraw multiple times). I'd done all the fixes for proper cleanup of the plugin dir (what you see in temp) at the same time. It seems that for some reason ClamWin was overlooked. Once folks have tested this new launcher, I'll re-release ClamWin Portable with the updated launcher.

In the future, please report bugs like files left behind rather than having a vague grudge against splash screens. In all the times you said you didn't like them, you always complained about the fact that they faded... due, I assumed, to some illogical aversion to fading. If you'd just mentioned the files being left behind and that's why you didn't like them, I would have fixed it right away.

My Bad,

John,

Again I am so sorry.
First, I did not know that it was ClamWinP that was the culprit. The directories created have variable names like "nsy1BD.tmp". The only file in them was newadvsplash.dll and since I run at least FFP, TBP, and CWP every day, and usually more than once I just assumed that they were ALL leaving the directories and files behind.

Second, I thought the purpose of the file WAS the fading of the splash, I thought I'd read that somewhere but don't recall where.

It had been mentioned in the group that all apps, even U3, Ceedo, anothers leave some kind of trace on the host. I thought this was just one of those things. It never occured to me that I was seeing something that no one else was seeing.

You do such good work and people are always saying "I want this, I want that (think PAM!)" and of course the famous "ClamWin has updated, when will PA?", I did not want to bug you with what I thought was just an accepted part of PA (Again, I thought it was All of them).

In the future I will try to give better feed back.

Anyway, I tested the new launcher you provided.

It seems great!
All of the files and directories go away after a simple Launch and Scan, However, after an Update Check, the file "ClamWin_Upadte_Time" (no extention, 1k) remanins behind (not to be picky but you did say to tell you stuff).

Is this launcher stable (e.g. should I continue to use it till the next release?

Keep up the great work

No worries / Update

No worries, Tim. Just a suggestion for future issues.

Of all the portable platforms, PortableApps.com is the only one that doesn't leave anything behind in APPDATA or the registry (with the exception of MUICache at the moment, which affects all of em). Individual apps on each platform have bugs that need tending to (like this one we're fixing now).

I've just updated the launcher to 1.2.3.1 which should also now clean up that file you mentioned. As well as another I discovered after an interrupted scan. Give it a try.

Works great!

John,

All files seem to be going away on exit, geat work, and so fast!

Please realize that I am not a programer. You've updated the launcher twice in one day! I had no idea it was that "easy"!
Perhaps I'll bug you more often Wink

So, Again, is this a stable release that I should continue to use till the next release, or should I think of it as kinda Beta/RC and be carful for bugs.

Same here

I havent tested the new launcher yet, but (just for the record) the "ClamWin_Upadte_Time" file was in my temp dir too.
Forgot to mention it.
Sorry

Ok, test this

It looks like new behavior in the later ClamWin releases. And, sadly, it looks like the launcher will have to stick around and delete the temp log files when done as there's no way to redirect them to the key and ClamWin keeps a lock on them while running. Try this launcher as it should resolve both issues:

Is there

any bigger problem with the launcher running till the app closed?
Or is it just the system resources (shouldn't use much System resources, though)?

Resources

Nope, just the resources thing. But even on an overloaded system, it would get swapped out to disk since it isn't doing anything while ClamWin is running. I just try to keep things as simple as possible.
