@John

I was under the assumption that software is allowed if the launcher is open-source and either the software is open-source or you have the permission from the author.
Indeed, I was about to start with some programs which are freeware, but I had the permission from. Pardon

Puzzled

I believed this also.

Wink is a freeware program that I got the approval for from Satish and that has been allowed on here with a direct download link since last year when I posted it https://portableapps.com/node/3084.

but this is not freeware

As in the description of this app: "This version is the unregistered one, unlimited trial version with banner", so it's not a freeware programme. Just think about it: John get's only donations, nothing else for his work, so it's just the least, that he removes links from his site, which leads to trial versions with banners which promote commercial apps.

If you want some good mp3 tag modifier software, look for TagScanner! It's not open source, but totally free, and doesn't need much modification to run portable.

Self promotion and open source

Self promotion in general is frowned upon in pretty much any community forum. I've made a very specific exception to this rule here at PortableApps.com for open source apps under an OSI-approved license. The reason for this is to encourage the development of portable open source software.

This only applies to apps that are fully open source, so both the app and the launcher must be open source. If you write an open source launcher for a closed source app, you're essentially promoting closed source software. While that's fine and legal, it doesn't fall into the self promotion exception here, so you can't promote it here. If someone were to ask about that app being portable or that type of app, then you're, of course, free to mention it.

Take a Winamp launcher, for instance. If someone were to ask about making Winamp portable, you could post about your launcher. But you couldn't start a topic to specifically promote it. (Of course, it would be illegal for you to use the Winamp name or trademarks, but that's another story) It's a fine line, perhaps, but it's designed to encourage open source app creation as that way, we don't have to worry about a company turning around and taking software away from us later.

All that said, and as I've discussed on the site before, I'm bringing a download server online to allow this site to make some non open source apps portable. With special attention in areas where there is no comparable open source equivalent in the same category. The goal here is to make it so that the PortableApps.com Platform can serve the needs of folks who need some closed source software but still allowing them to use an open source platform and majority open source software rather than being locked into a specific closed hardware platform or a constant pay to upgrade cycle of closed source software platforms. It will also help this site become self sufficient (it isn't yet).

In addition, the no freeware self promotion angle could change once we get to this point. It'll be up for discussion.

Make sense?

Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
