I just installed PortableApps on W764. Looks like I'm going to start going Portable as much as I can going forward.
I selected several apps that I've previously installed using windows installers such as ditto.
Ditto has a 32 bit and 64 bit installers; PortableApps installed the 32 bit version. Same with 7-zip...
Is there someplace to override this, or will I just need to manually install programs like ditto 64bit when this happens... and then manage updates in the future instead of having PortableApps do that?
Everything is handled automatically. 7-Zip has both 32-bit and 64-bit included and automatically runs the 64-bit version on your system because it will give you a small ~7% boost in compression/decompression speed. Ditto is 32-bit only as the 64-bit version has no advantage and requires more memory. Counter-intuitively, the vast majority of 64-bit apps perform the same or slower. We only bundle it when there is an advantage or when it is required: https://portableapps.com/node/24371
The one exception is Firefox which is also dual mode. There is a small advantage to 64-bit being able to run web apps that require more memory (over 2TB overall footprint) and keeping over 100 tabs open. But 64-bit Firefox is also slower overall, less stable, and has more security issues than the 32-bit version. The 64-bit version also drops all plugin support except Flash.
Sometimes, the impossible can become possible, if you're awesome!
