I'm new here and this is my second day in your forum.
first of all thanks for your wonderful collection of portable apps and second that I can't understand is why don't you use QEMU Manager which is a portable GUI for QEMU to build your own compact virtual machine and run what ever you need on your virtual pc ????

in this way all your data is safe from infection by virus and making backup is as easy as copying your virtual hard disk file.
at least for me it was much better that using dsl or puppy and the good news is that you don't need to stick with linux and you can have a compact win98 VM for less than 200MB or even XP and VISTA .

does anybody have tried this before ???

Why don't we just use QEMU Manager?..
Well, just a guess, but mayhaps it's because QEMU itself is said by the author to only be in "alpha" stage regarding its Windows version.
I'm trying to find out from folks on another thread what their experience has been with it, for if an alpha stage app performs well, who cares about its "alpha-ness"?...
On the other hand, if said alpha *behaves* like an alpha - all the bugs you can eat, and then some - I'd just as soon wait till it has at least 'graduated' to beta form...

I've been using Qemu for years and find it to be quite stable, for what I want to do with it. Then again I don't have a need for Audio, USB, or "high end" graphics support - though I've read that support for those sorts of things exists.
That being said, I use PortableApps because I can use the protable apps on the files of the host computer. I use ClamWin AV to check friend's computers for viruses and I use OpenOffice to edit files on my parents machine's where they don't have Office and don't need a whole office app sitting around mocking them.
Qemu is great for emulation, trying out Linux distributions, and testing ISO files before burning them - but getting the emulated machine to talk with the host environment is beyond the skills of most uers (it involves setting up virtual network cards & stuff like that). I've done it, it works - but it's not plug-n-play like most PortableApps are.
What I'd like to see is a Qemu version of DSL or PuppyLinux that plugs into ProtableApps!
